J is teething at the mo - can feel the teeth wanting to break thru under the skin, anyhow last 2 days he's been off his food, last night didn't sleep till gone 11 and was burning up (had 2 doses of calprofen stuff and bonjela before settaling till 2.30 then milk then awake at 6, anyhow today he's eaten about the same - half a slice of toast, little yoghurt bit of biccy (bad muumy) anyhow yesterday he was drinking his milk, today he's not as keen on it thou settled with water as well yesterday.

he's drinking his water today but my question is should I not give him solids and just milk for the rest of today to see how he goes? how long can he stay like that for? all's he's really wanting is sleep and cuddles - which is what we've been doing today. he's also have 1/3 of a banana but he was more intrested in squidging it tbh.

any thoughts, obv I don't want to starve him -0 he's not being sick it's the burning up last ngiht which was worrying thou - v v nearly called the doctor but then he settled down, really unsure what to do for the best with him - I know we're gonna have some bad nights to come thou

Children never really eat much when they are poorly. As long as you are giving him lots of drinks and keep offering things to him he should be ok. He'll take it when he feels like it.

madmarchhare · 06/02/2007 14:53

Agree

CanStarveWillStarve · 06/02/2007 15:00

Did you take his temp Munz - what was it? Although there can be a slight increase due to teething, it shouldn't be a 'burning up' temp, so if it is then it may be that he is sickening for something rather than just teeth.

On the eating thing, have you tried offering him something really soft that doesn't require any biting? DD will eat stuff like semolina pudding with jam, or root veg mash (potato, sweet potato and parsnip for us) when she isn't up to much else - can J feed himself with a spoon ok yet - these are thick enough to stick on if he can?

munz · 06/02/2007 15:01

so I should still offer solids as well? I was thinking along the lines of just milk to see how he goes?

with the temp thing, is it normal for them to get a bad one when teething (he hasn't before that's all) last night he went to bed in just a vest and a blanket, but was still really hot.

should I let him sleep as/when he wants - sounds silly but before now he's always been ok well better than this iycwim. and hasn't really been sick at all.

csws - no he's still picking things up with his hands, didn't take his temp, we were just going on the feel of his forhead,

princessmel · 06/02/2007 15:03

I don't think he would be that hot with just teething. I'd probably take him to the docs just to check him over.

You can offer solids but if he's that poorly he really won't feel like it. It won't hurt to only have milk for a few days.

CanStarveWillStarve · 06/02/2007 15:10

Agree with pm. If you have a thermometer then I'd take his temp, and get him to docs if it's still high just for a once over. Did his chest feel hot too - I've always been told that this is where you should test for temp if just feeling?

He'll be fine with just milk if he's happy to drink this, but bear in mind the suggestions for future bouts of teething .

munz · 06/02/2007 15:16

yes certainly will, we were feeling his forhead - I need to get a digital thermometer. this was 11pm at night (hence why we couldn't get to the dr's) I did check him all over for any rashes etc and anything like that, he wouldn't settle at all for DH but did for me pretty much instantly.

he's having a second nap now today, so i'm thinking to just ride it out with him iycwim. his temp is def not as high as last night was.

off to hunt for a digital thermometer now.

How is he today Munz?

Toothyboy · 07/02/2007 13:25

Sorry to hear J's not well Munz. I would let him sleep as much as he wants. Keep offering milk and fluids and try bits of food every so often.

Ds2 has just come down with chicken pox and is sleeping loads, also off his food. I'm just offering all his faves: bread and butter, cheese, fruit - he's eating little bits and pieces, but nowhere near as much as he usually does!

Hope J feels better soon .

munz · 07/02/2007 15:41

he's a lot better today thanks csws. was only up oncein the night, his temp is back to normal now still a bit grisially but nothing compareed to before - tbh I now think it's just his teeth. he did have the extra nap yesterday which ment he didn't want to go to bed at 7 (went at half past) but he honestly needed it in the afternoon. he's eating a lot more as well today which i'm pleased about. has also had more milk and water today as well.

we didn't go swimming this morning - I thought it best to keep him off tbh.

toothy what symptoms did you get with chicken pox?

now I just have to decided if he's going to have his jab next monday or not - i'm thinking not as he's been poorly this week. it's the new one out.

(todays grissaling I mean not the last few days - am thikning 24 hour bug? there has been a lot of that about- althou his nappies have been the same as normal)

The biggest giveaway for the pox was ds1 having it first! Other than that ds2 has been full of snot and coughs for the last couple of weeks, and generally a bit restless. I didn't notice a fever or raised temperature, but that's a symptom as well I think.
