Hysterectomy - the good, the bad and the ugly?

Yesterday I got a confirmed date for a hysterectomy. I''m having it to prevent endometrial cancer, rather than to reduce heavy periods. Feel a bit nervous now, now I have an actual date. Also, even though I don't intend to have any more children (late 40s, with teenage sons), I feel slightly weird that that option is being taken away from me.

Please share your experiences.

Thanks.

I'm now one week post surgery, and survived.

i didn't go down to theatre until late, which made it a long day. The lemon flavoured pre-op drinks were okay, but I struggled to finish them off. However, I didn't feel too hungry so they must have worked.

Post-op I feel reasonable okay. The trapped wind (sorry, tmi) was painful at times, and the constipation. However, things have definitely improved.

I'm not in any pain, the strongest painkiller I've had is paracetamol. I feel a little achey but not painful. I felt a twinge earlier when I got up so wound myself up that earlier that I pulled something!

I'm now lounging around at home and feeling lethargic. I think I need to,start going out and getting some fresh air. The teen dcs have been good, cooking and doing the washing. I don't think dh realised how often i ran around taking and collecting dcs from clubs.

Overall, not a bad experience, so far..

Glad you are feeling OK. Remember to take it easy as you are not in pain doesn't mean you won't be if you over do it - I found out the hard way Smile.

Great to hear you're having a positive experience, 228. I have my hysterectomy booked for the end of November, and it will have to be abdominal rather than keyhole because of the size of the fibroid.

I'm not looking forward to it, but it's good to hear that your recovery has been good so far.
