sore joints since birth of dd

Hi, dd is 4.5 months old, since her birth I have had really stiff & sore ankles, feet and knees. I thought it was some post birth thing but it hasn't really cleared up. I am more sore in the morning - find it really hard to walk down stairs before I have had a hot bath. Anyone else had symtoms like this? Am going to see doctor next week but would like some information. Dreading being told I have arthritis

Actually my soreness started about halfway through my pregnancy. I kept telling the MW that it felt like I was developing arthritis but never got a straight answer about it. It did finally go away several months after the birth. Can't remember exactly how long it took though.

thank god i found this thread. thought it was due to all the weight i'd put on while bfing. now realise its probably due to the bfing. thank god there's going to be an end to it... i can live with it now... but i have been quite scared....

emkana · 10/09/2004 08:28

I don't think it's the b/feeding - I had it really badly after dd1, but not after all after dd2, and I breastfed both/am still feeding now. It just went a few months after having dd1 - possibly to do with weight loss actually, I think it got better once I started going to slimming classes.

pesme · 10/09/2004 09:08

lol hausfrau, you are right. it is a mystery. not sure it is weight either as I don't weigh that much more.

woodstock · 12/09/2004 00:51

Maybe a hormonal thing? I had only put on about 20 pounds when it started for me so I don't know that it was so much the extra weight.

Lolski · 13/09/2004 12:21

I cannot believe that I have found this thread. I have just spent the weekend moaning to my mum that I feel about 90 years old (I am 38 with a 9 month old DS). In the morning I can just about get down the stairs like a crab and everytime I sit down for more than 5 minutes I feel like I have run the marathon when I get up. A couple of months ago I went to the doctors and had blood tests for arthritis and they were clear. I have been being such a drama queen imagining all sorts of nasty things like MS etc. I have also had pins and needles a lot in my feet so it is such a relief to read this.

cuckoo2004 · 14/09/2004 20:54

I've got it too..........and I thought I was the only one.

I've had pains in my ankles and have to heave myself out of the bed/chair and walking downstairs is still awkward and uncomfortable. I feel about a hundred years old and am very embarrassed about it. It started towards the end of my pregnancy and I expected it to go when I had the baby 4 months ago. Is it only older mothers that get it (I'm 38)? It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one.

woodstock · 15/09/2004 03:50

Interesting. I was 38 when I had ds - turned 39 in March. I wondered about the age thing being it.

hazlinh · 15/09/2004 05:07

i am 26. clearly not an age thing. only have one dd too. had pains behind my left knee, and now strained a muscle in my left hip. have had difficulty walking, moving around in bed for about 2 weeks now since that hip strain. shud be using crutches to go to work really. am limping like an old man. methinks i must go to the dr today after putting it off for so long...

ooh I have these pains as well (and I'm not young either!). The only bad news I can add is that my youngest child is nearly 3 and I still have terrible problems with my wrists and fingers. The pain in my knees and ankles comes and goes and I'm not aware of any SPD pain unless I do something silly like play football. I have supports for my wrists (sunrise, I have the same thing as you) and I only wear them when my wrists hurt badly.

If it gives you any hope, I saw a drastic improvement once my youngest was around 12-18 months (i.e. when I stopped having to carry him around as much). I don't think it was the carrying that caused the pain but it certainly made it stay around a bit longer!

Wow what a relief to know that im not going to literally fall apart and need a neck, hip, back and knee replacement. Also seen homeopath, osteopath doctors etc and how stupid am i the osteopath did say that its the lactic acid in the joints and the relaxin still coursing through the body but seriously i thought i was on the road to becoming a seriously terminally ill wheel chair bound mum. Gee i really feel like a drama queen know but then again watching me bent over like a 90 year first thing in the morning isnt that funny either

sleeplessmumof2 · 08/11/2004 18:42

hows everyone feeling? I have a suspicion and would like to confirm or reject it

How many of us think we may have allergies? if so what do you think you may (or are )allergic too?

I have cut certain things out of my diet in the last week and although by no means now a sprightly gymnast i do have to admit to being a whole lot more mobile and in less pain.

Anyone care to comment?

sleepless- what do you think your allergy is then- i hadn't thought of allergies

sleeplessmumof2 · 09/11/2004 10:15

well i know i have a wheat intolerance and am suspicious that am now developing a dairy one too. Im just trying to figure out what causes the 'flare ups' and what helps to keep the pains at bay does anyone fancy trying to do a semi controlled test on astaining from wheat products with me for say a week and see what happens?? or any other thing that you may think aggravates the condition?

foxinsocks · 09/11/2004 10:28

scaltygirl, how bizarre! My old gp (have moved now) was completely disinterested when I explained about my aches and pains. My wrists used to be in absolute agony and I used to try and explain how it felt like my tendon was jumping over the sticky out bone in my wrist (anatomy is not my strong point!) and they used to look at me as if I was mad! In fact, it was the physio I saw for my SPD that told me what it was (de Quervains).

I hadn't thought of allergies either. I do know that if I drink too much red wine I get quite achy but I'm sure that's related to uric acid/gout type pains. I do think that mine is largely related to use of the joint more than anything else though.

foxinsox im really intrigued that you have suffered SPD, me too, any one else here suffered or thought they may of suffered spd?

sleeplessmumof2 · 10/11/2004 16:18

scaltygirl, did you suffer carpal tunnel?

poking around in the dark abit may be but i wonder if there are any connections to these conditions and more long term problems????

foxinsocks · 10/11/2004 17:11

sleepless - I think you will find a lot of people on mumsnet suffered SPD - I don't post as frequently as some of the others so if there's anything specific you wanted to ask, someone else is bound to answer quicker than me!

I didn't suffer it at all with my first pregnancy (although I did get full on carpal tunnel syndrome with my first from very early on in the pregnancy). But it was with my second that I really suffered and I am convinced that it was because my second pregnancy was so soon after my first one - I fell pregnant with ds when dd was only 5 and a half months old and I'm not sure my body had fully recovered. My carpal tunnel syndrome hadn't even gone away and the second pregnancy seemed to make it twice as bad. I then got terrible, agonising SPD and this de Quervains.

The SPD has largely disappeared but if I do anything silly like kick a football or jump down from a ladder on one foot, I can almost feel my pelvis twist in two. I hope that these feelings won't last for ever (especially my wrists) but who knows...it's now 3 years (exactly) since ds was born.

Have just read this thread (thanks kittypickle) and i'm somewhat relieved that all the aches and pains are due to lactic acid and relaxin hormones still hanging around. Can't say i'm looking forward to the hair thinning, thought I was past that. Still, I do have very thick hair so I may end up being grateful for that

Anyway, though I would resurrect this thread as it may be of help to others.
