Gestational Diabetes - any experience??

I saw my midwife yesterday and she found traces of glucose in my urine - another test next week and then if it's there again, will have to go for tests for gestational diabetes. I know it's not a huge deal, but wondered if anyone has any experience of it and what it meant for treatment etc?
Thanks!

had my baby 1yr ago and had gestational diabetes. 1st you have to have glucose test by fasting for several hours then they test your blood and urine for raised sugar levels. based on results, you may be able to control diabetes by what you eat, i,e no sugars, less carbs etc or like me have insulin injections several times a day and record everything you eat! very boring!! but the good news is in nearly all cases it dissapears after baby arrives as it did with me.hope you'll be fine too.

I had glucose in my urine and they did a glucose tolerance test where they give you a blood test after fasting then give you a special drink with certain amount of glucose in it then another blood test after a couple of hours. For me the test came out showing no gestational diabetes, but I continued to get glucose in my urine throughout the rest of pregnancy. All was fine in the end. One thing they worry about with gestational diabetes is that the baby might end up quite large. Not sure of any other probs.

I had gestational diabetes on first and third pregnancy (but not second for some reason). Luckily I was diet controlled. In some cases you are put on insulin.

The hospital where I had my last were very supportive and there was a dietician etc to explain things.

It's no big problem. Babies born to mothers with gestiational diabetes tend to be on the larger size, especially if the sugars are not controlled. So you will probably be seen more often during your pregnancy and will have to stick to eating healthy food, smaller meals more often. All this should be explained IF you have it.

Hope this helps.

I also meant to say that once you have had your baby the diabetes usually goes away. You have a 50% chance of developing it again in the ten years following your pregnancy.
