Rough, goosebumpy skin on 12mo-- what is it?

schment · 05/02/2007 22:11

My dd has some patches of skin that are rough and on close inspection look like it's a bunch of tiny-white goosebumps or white-head pimples without the puss. I'm in the tropics so I imagine it's not dry-skin related (or could it be?). It doesn't seem to itch. She has allergies but hasn't been introduced to anything new lately so don't think that's it. Any ideas on what it could be? Anyone else seen this?

could possibly be what my son has, try googling keratosis pilaris

Troutpout · 05/02/2007 22:27

Where are the patches?

schment · 06/02/2007 13:58

She has some patches on her chest and belly. I looked on google for keratosis pilaris (and have now decided that I have that...). It might be that but it's not red at all...

unlikely then to be keratosis if she has it on her chest and belly, maybe another type of skin condition?

Troutpout · 06/02/2007 15:49

heat/sweat rash?
doesn't sound like Keratosis (wrong areas)

schment · 06/02/2007 22:31

I don't think it's heat rash as she's had that before and it gets all pink. This looks almost like chicken skin in the sense that there are little white raised areas but they aren't pussy or hard. Can heat rash do that?

might it be exczma (sp??). what you describe sounds like v low level exczma that ds1 has to me?? he doesnt itch much when its like this but sometimes flares up and becomes red and weepy and v itchy. try sudocream or v weak steroid (hydrocortisone) if you think that what it might be....

pipsqueak · 06/02/2007 22:39

kidstrak, my dd2 has keratosis pilaris which she hates in the summer . i have tried using heavy duty moisuriser but not terribly effective . just wondered if you have you found anything that works?

schment · 07/02/2007 14:02

controlfreaky - I'm not so sure that it's exczema since I have it and she had it a bit before and it doesn't look similar but maybe it's a minor case. I've got a small stash of sudocream with me so I'll try that and see what happens.

pipsqueak - when I was googling, I found this site that has a discussion forum with some suggestions on treatments for keratosis.

Eczema comes in all forms. Mine is different all over my body, and funnily enough it can be irritated by humid climates.

I get round patches of raised bumps that are rough, when scratched they look white. Sounds like patches of dry skin to me!!!

schment · 07/02/2007 14:26

funkimummy - so I guess dry skin in humid weather is possible after all. I'll try lots of lotion plus some sudocrem and see what happens.

Sorry about the link. I tried to do a link for www.keratosispilaris.org .

Let me try again: this

Give it a go Schment. Or try E45 or something like that. I tend to get that type of eczema more in the summer (over here in blighty) but get the real nasty sore stuff in the winter.

Kidstrak · 07/02/2007 20:38

pipsqueak, doctor has only ever prescribed an emoillent like diprobase and a slightly stronger one but they never had much effect, when he was a baby he was prescribed fucidin to use twice daily mostly in winter time when it was at its worst covering his face, arms and legs. I'm dreading his teenage years as the doctors have said it will be at its worst and i have acne so he hasn't got much hope of having clear skin.

I would def recommend a visit to Cyprus we went on holiday there last year and ds face cleared within a few days, must be something to do with the sun/heat it flared up slightly at the end of the year there but its not too bad at the moment.

pipsqueak · 07/02/2007 23:31

thanks for the info kidstrak. dd2 has it on her upper arms and is now 11 so beginning to get self conscious about it . shame that there doesnt appear to be an effective treatment ...love the idea of a trip to cyprus though ..purely in hte interests of medical research of course

Troutpout · 08/02/2007 16:53

sorry for hijack schment..but pipsqueak and kidstrak...do you both have the keratosis too? (it's a genetic condition isn't it?)
I had it really bad both as a child and then worse as a teenager.
I was told it would get better as you get older...and to my amazement it really has. (i'm 40 this year) I have smooth upper arms for the first time in my life (admittedly i now have bingo wings anyway so i don't care anymore...but that's life )

Troutpout · 08/02/2007 16:54

i heard creams with vitamin A are supposed to help btw ...but don't quote me

Kidstrak · 09/02/2007 12:56

troutpout yes its in the family although my side don't have it, dh has always had rough uper arms and so does his mum but both had thought nothing of it until ds was diagnosed with it and the doctor said someone in either side will have it, although ds is quite bad with it especially when he was a baby/toddler so ds gets it from his dad and grandmother, i don't have it neither does dd thank goodness

Troutpout · 09/02/2007 17:49

Aaah..my boy doesn't have it
but i have passed it on to dd
Her upper arms are really bad.. bit sore atm...and atm her cheeks on her face are bad too. She has a little on her thighs in winter but it's all generally much better in the summer.
Bodyshop hemp face protector is the best i have found so far ,in terms of keeping the generall roughness a little better...but am still in search of a really good cream

pipsqueak · 10/02/2007 20:22

i had this as teenager but not too badly and it seemed to disappear by mid thirites. dd1 has it but not dd2. i'll try hte body shop stuff .oddly dd1 is worse in the summer thatn the winter...very frustrating !

hoolagirl · 10/02/2007 20:42

My ds has this, its mild eczema

Kidstrak · 12/02/2007 11:29

sorry its not i'm afraid its a build up of keratin its not classed as mild excema

schment · 12/02/2007 14:55

I think hoolagirl may have been responding to the original question not to keratosis.

In any case, no worries, r.e. the hijack - glad you are getting some info from this. And, I think I have keratosis so it's interesting for me. I found that the shea butter body butter from Body Shop helps clear up my bumps. Until now, I just thought it was dry skin.

As for dd... I think it may just clogged pores from the heat. I've been taking advantage of time in ques to stare at other peoples skin and I've seen it on some other people too. I'm going to stop worrying about dd and see if I can fix my own skin!
