Had a horrible reaction to a glass of champagne today - WTF is that all about?

I've been finding for the last few moths that I can get quite hung over after just a couple of glasses of wine. Not always, but often. I get headachy and a bit of diarrhoea.

Anyway, I was at the ballet with DD today and I thought, why not, quick glass of champagne in the interval, bit of a treat.

Well, I was so ill! About 5 mins after finishing it and going back in to the seat, I started getting an ache in my belly, like period pain. Next thing, I had a strong pulsing pins and needles feeling in my lower arms and legs. I felt cold, sweaty and very faint. I didn't want to miss the ballet so sat there panting and squirming, whilst whispering to DD not to panic if I had to go out - I really thought I'd have to. Made it to the next interval, managed to stand up without fainting, but very wobbly - made it out into the flyer, sat there looking like a right tit with my head between my knees, had a few sips of water and closed my eyes for 10 mins, then it passed, I was fine for the rest of the day. Must have lasted about 40 mins altogether - very scary, never happened like that before.

Why on earth would I have reacted like that? I'm not a big champagne drinker, but I've never reacted like that to any alcohol before (and I've had plenty of practice over the years). Anyone shed any light?

TIA

I should add, I'm not a big drinker - couple of glasses of wine once or twice a week tops(or, recently, g&t to avoid the wine problem). Hadn't drunk any alcohol since last weekend.

sounds not unlike when i get an attack of IBS, tbh. i haven't had a bad attack for years but i know that fizzy alcohol used to bring them on. might it be that?

Switch to another form of booze.

suppose it might be - never had it. but I am taking iron at the moment, and it's not having the expected constipation effect - a little the opposite. so maybe

Yes, expat, i've tried rediscovering my old 'arf a lager days, and gin. It's just that this was really quite scary.

Sounds like my IBS attacks too- brought on exactly like that by alcohol in any form.

I get exactly the same - it's bloody awful isn't it. I refused a glass of champagne on a plane last week because I knew it would end in tears.
