Persistent microscopic blood in urine - anybody help please at my wits end.

I've posted about this before and thought things had resolved themselves but they haven't. It started last November when I thought I had cystitis and the dipstick showed a trace of blood in urine. Then I was fine for a few months.

Beginning of July this year cystitis symptoms came back and I go to GP, nothing on dipstick other than red blood cells. Given more antibiotics.

Antibiotics helped but symptoms remained so I have been back four times now. All the dipsticks have showed blood. Three cultures have been sent to the lab, first of which showed no blood but mixed bacteria growth, second showed blood but no growth, third showed blood but no growth. Incidentally the third dipstick showed nothing, not even blood but only blood showed on the laboratory culture result.

Have a very good female GP now who is trying to get to the bottom of it. I've recently had vaginal swabs to rule out any infection or STI (been married for ten years but I suppose they have to rule it out don't they). These have all come back clear apart from a tiny amount of white cells which she's not worried about.

She's now said that she wants me to do another urine sample to check for blood and if there is blood in it she is going to refer me to an urologist. This has been nearly three months now of to-ing and fro-ing and I expect another few weeks to get results of urine test and GP appointment to discuss results, then a referral of god knows how many weeks.

She's told me I do not qualify for the two week pathway for an urgent referral.

I suffer from extreme anxiety so I have taken it upon myself to book a private consultation at the local Spire hospital with an urologist for next Tuesday because I just can't wait any longer to find out why I have this blood in my urine.

I know I will probably be referred for a cystoscopy or scans and i'm shitting a brick about the results....have been consulting Dr Google and it could be a number of things, some of which are pretty significant so my anxiety is through the roof.

Has anybody else been through this or is anybody got any words of wisdom?

My symptoms for urine infection have now completely disappeared by the way so this blood is the only thing lingering.

I just want the worry to go away (i'm on citalopram for anxiety).

Thanks for listening :)

Tanfastic No i don't dismiss the original complaint but i had this effect to where the one was causing the other to be worse than what it was. Its as if they feedback on each other making to overall thing worse.
Not aided by Goggle either!

That was all, no offence meant or intended at all!

Is it a flexible cystoscopy or one under general?

Tanfastic · 18/10/2016 19:42

Flexible I assume. I haven't had the letter yet, just a phone call. She said I didn't need to bring anyone wth me so I assume it won't be a general.

Tanfastic... I don’t know if you’ll see I’ve posted here but I’m currently having an identical experience to you. And I mean identical!! Was anything ever discovered for you? How have you been since xxx

Widget123 · 23/12/2018 22:15

Ps I know this post is a couple of years old but taking a desperate shot in the dark the OP may get an email notification and be able to respond!

Hi @widget123
I've just gone / going through similar now.
Have you had any tests ?

Widget123 · 09/02/2019 19:29

Hi Clastegra, I’ve got a cystoscopy booked for next month. I’ve still got the microscopic blood in my urine and cystitis like pain. It’s presenting as Intertsitial Cystitis now but I’m trying evrything I can to find relief from it. Cutting out tomatoes, orange juice, alcohol and caffeine has been a must for me but I’m still in pain 24/7. Even a glass of water makes my bladder hurt.

My mum has had microscopic blood in her urine her whole life, no cause has been found and it’s never caused her a problem (she doesn’t have any pain etc with it), for some like her apparently this can be normal.

I’m currently on my 6th course of antibiotics in 5 months. I don’t know if they’re doing anything but sometimes the pain gets so bad I just need to know I’m doing something... anything really.

I really hope you feel better soon, this is so horrible and no one seems to be able to help us... Flowers xxx

Ps. I did have a private CT scan last month as an ultrasound found a shadow on my kidney. It all came out fine they checked my whole urinary tract and no problems. I’m wondering what the cystoscopy will show. Just seems such a long wait

Clastegra · 09/02/2019 19:55

I had my kidney ultrasound n cystoscopy last few days n all clear, got to have 24hr urine collection now.

The cystoscopy was painless and over very quickly. So please don't worry about it. XX
Hope you get some answers, I read alot about this haematuria and almost everything I read says it's very common for no reason to be found.

I just wish it wasn't there :(
