How do I improve my core to stop doing my back in? Swimming?

I keep putting my back out and have just done it again. I've been to see loads of physics over the years since having my third baby and know the problem is I have a weak core.

Trouble is I don't think yoga is for me, and I can't find a non-exorbitant pilates class that works for me (I work full-time).

Does swimming help? There's a nice, affordable gym with pool near me that I could join, but I'm not sure if swimming is any good for the core.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks all!

ps: you can do lots of pilates type exercises at home, don't need to go to a class at all.

You need a strong core to be a good swimmer/cyclist but they don't specifically strengthen the core. A good Pilates class really is the answer, done right every exercise works to strengthen the deep abdominal muscles. It is not just stretching!

Years of Pilates have completely sorted out my lower back pain and I have a super strong core which benefits my running, my posture and day to day activitites.

Thank you all so much - I have just read through all the replies and there's loads of really helpful stuff there.

I went to see a physio tonight and he's given me some exercises to do and told me he's about to set up an early morning Pilates class which sounds just the job. I used to do Pilates a lot and loved it but recently haven't found a good teacher. But as he's a physio I think he will probably be good.

Want to do swimming too - thanks for the earplugs recommendation!

Much appreciated all. - I really was in extremis when I posted and will really make the most of all your tips X
