Raised temp in DS2 after surgery on Tuesday (7 yrs old)

DS1 had op on Tueday to remove metal plate from Tibia, he recovered really quickly and we were allowed home the same day; he even went to school on Wednesday afternoon!
This morning he got up and was really miserable, really really thirsty, and his temp measured 39.2. I calpolled him (if that isn't a verb it should be), rang Alder Hey, who advised go to GP, and have been to the GP.
The GP I saw is the same one who told me there was no point in doing a PG test as I had a coil (I was 19 weeks it turned out. She said just keep up with calpol and it is probably a virus (fair enough), but I am worried about infection after the op. I can't look at the wound as it is all bandaged up and there is no way I want to expose it unnecessarily.
Does anyone have any advice on how I would tell if it is infection of wound or just some other random bug.
(he is quite cheerful now btw, and I am no doubt being overworried )
Bring on the reassurance

Soiunds like an infection to me - but whether it is an infection of the wound or just a cold, ear infection etc. would be impossible to say until he gets further symptoms.

JillybeansNW · 02/02/2007 13:57

He has had a few ops and we have never had any problems with infections b4. Would the wound itself start to hurt? Or what symptoms should I look out for?

Not sure - without looking at the wound - and I think you are right about not checking t unnecessarily. I was actually thinking about waiting for symptoms of the cold/earache other random fever inducing infection etc.

Are there a lot of chesty colds going around where you are - there certainly is in Leics - and DTDs have been running temps >39 with it.

I'd call the ward back Jilly if you're still worried. Tell them what the GP said. dd had some pins put in her leg last year and got an infection in one of her wounds. This was despite having pre and post-op AB's has she has other complications.

Do you have a appointment for dressings/stitch removal? Or a nurse at your practice who would check the wound?

JillybeansNW · 02/02/2007 16:15

The appointment for changing dressings etc is Thursday next week. Consultant said I could have that done at GPs if I prefer, so have appointment for Friday next week instead of trying to park at Alder Hey.
Temp back up to 39 again. He is quiet but not limp iykwim. If he had a cough or sore throat or earache I would feel a bit better about it really as I would be more confident that it isn't an infection.
Might call the ward again

TBH if he has a temp so soon post op I think the wound should be checked. Ring Alder Hay and see what the nurses on the ward suggest.

Heavenis · 02/02/2007 16:21

Does the area around the wound feel hot,or can you not tell through the dressing ?

Overrun · 02/02/2007 16:22

After dt1 had a hernia operation, he started with a high temp, and did turn out to be a virus, every one in the family had it, but I know how worrying it is. Hope that its not his wound.

tissy · 02/02/2007 16:26

You could go and see the practice nurse and avoid the GP! It would be perfectly OK for the nurse to remove and replace the dressing in order to check the wound. If the wound looks OK, it is likely that the infection is elsewhere. Occasionally, a collection of blood clot under the wound can cause a temperature, even if there is no infection.

JillybeansNW · 02/02/2007 16:37

Thank you all for that. I have spoken to ward again and they say that as there are no other symptoms to explain the temp i should go in and get it checked in AnE. So, am gonna wait for DH to get home and then pop back to alder hey [sigh]
I guess I should have rung them earlier but having spoken to them this AM I thought that i was being overworried/daft.
Feel a bit better now.

Oh and I can't get anywhere near the wound as he is bandaged up comletely - not going to undo it myself - will leave that to the pros

Good luck up there. Hope is all is well. Best to rule it out.

Heavenis · 02/02/2007 20:23

Hope you get things sorted and are not to long at Alder Hey.

JillybeansNW · 02/02/2007 22:01

Back from hossy (please say last word in appropriate l-pool accent). CHecked wound and bone and no infection (YAY), which means he is coming down with a coughy coldy lurgy thing (booo)

Never looked forward to a cold so much

Glad it's OK Jilly. I was in a complete panic over dd's wound infection (over a pin going into her femoral growth plate) I was convinced she had MRSA.

JillybeansNW · 02/02/2007 23:31

Thanks
