Anyone with tick bite/Lyme disease experience?

Dd1(5) came up with bites that had the bullseye appearence. Doctor gave antibiotics as a precaution because although he didn't think it was Lyme disease, it wasn't something that he wanted to miss. She's barely had the meds because she hates it and spitting more out then swallowing.
My question is:
Do tick bites go down if they have Lyme disease? (They have without any meds)
I'm worried that she could be seriously ill if we miss it. She's had a cold and had a headache tonight so I did worry a bit.
She is well otherwise
Thanks

Had you said how old she is?

You could consider a blood test for borrellia antibodies - that might give some indication whether she is infected or not. Having said that, I had the typical rash and an equivocal blood test.

Mummytron · 05/09/2016 22:42

She's 5

Ah.
She may not enjoy a blood test then...

I had to give DS1 a once daily tablet for 4 months when he was 4-5 years old.
We used to stick in the spoonful of Nutella and down it went. He was very good about it.

Worthwhile considering a tablet. Or Ribera - black currant hides a multitude of tastes.

Or appeal to her grown-up side: "I know it tastes vile, sweetie, but the doctor said you MUST take it and it's only for a short time. Open wide and here comes your reward". Don't give her an option without getting too confrontational. Easier said than done, I know.

One of our dc has twice had Lyme rashes following tick bites (aged 4 and 5). We lived somewhere where it was endemic, not UK. This dc was prone to tick bites and has had absolutely loads of them over the years. My other dc have hardly had any.

With Lyme the rash will go down without abs. Tick bite will disappear even if Lyme is present. The rash (if there is one) is your signal to act now, just as you have.

Your dd absolutely must finish the abs, not spit them out. If you feel that she has not ingested the prescribed amount, go back to the GP, explain and ask for more, then ensure that she takes them using whatever means necessary (mix with coke and a straw and don't tell her?)

Sorry to sound so harsh but you are right, this cannot be ignored. The headache would worry me too. Cold not so much. Good luck!

Our neighbour's little girl has Lymes disease. They did not see a tick, but she did have the bull's eye rash, which faded after a couple of days. At first she presented with a mild fever, the gp (who hadn't seen the rash) proscribed a mild anti biotic which did not get rid of the Lymes, she has had recurring symptoms over the last couple of years and her mum tells me it is likely she will continue to do so.
Don't mess about, back to your gp and get it sorted. Mix the meds with jam, bribe with rewards or treats whatever it takes.

PikachuSayBoo · 05/09/2016 22:58

Did she have;

Normal bite, white ring, red ring

Or

Normal bite, red ring.

If the latter I would say it's a normal insect bite. The redness is just a reaction to the bite.

Not sure I'll sleep tonight!

My two get headaches from time to time, so it's not new

But agree it's worth taking the abx just incase.

The Dr may be able to prescribe a different, better tasting one. They had to do this for dd once when she refused a specific one as a toddler.

PikachuSayBoo · 05/09/2016 23:01

Sleep. There's nothing to worry about tonight, it's not that sort of illness and there's nothing you can do tonight. Up early tomorrow and in the phone to the GP.

strawberrybootlace · 05/09/2016 23:02

Ah if headaches aren't unusual that would worry me less. My dc did have headaches with one infection, which was not at all normal for them. Just get the abs down somehow and then you can relax!! Easier said than done I know.

This is the best photo I have...

It's not a text book Lyme disease rash, the bullseye red in the middle is normally bigger. With an ordinary insect bite you can get the White lump/reaction surrounding the bite so it could be that.

But for the sake of abx it's worth being cautious.

Mummytron · 05/09/2016 23:19

Thanks
I'm cautious, probably too much at times!
I left a message for the doc today so will chase him up first thing.
I think her complaining of a headache panicked me a bit
Thanks all

That just looks like an ordinary bite to me (not what I think of as bullseye rash) but I'm not medically trained. I tend to think that if a doctor has given abs then they need taking.

ParkingLottie · 06/09/2016 08:21

Mummyton, that is not a bulls eye rash. No way! Have you looked at images of a bulls eye rash?

Given that you did not see a tick, and that looks like an ordinary bite, I am surprised the GP even gave you Abs.

Honestly , it doesn't look as if you have anything to worry about!

EddieStobbart · 06/09/2016 15:04

That looks just like the mosquito bites I got in Norway, nothing like the bull's eye rash picture up thread

prokupatuskrakedatus · 06/09/2016 18:43

DS showed a very small and faint bull's eye rash.

He got 14 days of high antibiotics and even today after almost 9 years the GP regularily includes this when DS has his blood checked, as everything unusual is suspicious (growing pains, tiredness etc.).
