Hysteroscopy with local anaethetic

I've just noticed the thread below re with GA. I've had a read, but I've not been offered this on NHS. Just given an appointment for day surgery with no anaesthetic. Thus is because for interim bleeding and previous ovarian cyst which was removed. I now have a new smaller one. Oh joy.

Can anyone share reassuring experiences of this procedure because although I have had laparoscopy, iui X 3, IVF, 2 c sections, what feels like a Million internal examinations I feel v anxious about this procedure. Why am I so nervous?

They said my womb lining is too thick so they want to investigate. They may have to remove polyps if found.

Hey DooWhop. I'm glad you came onto the thread.

I had polyp removal and biopsy. Dr said my uterus lining was thick and could be caused by hormone imbalance. Too much extorted. She recommended a mirena coil.

How do you find the coil? She said it would thin my lining and stop anymore polyps forming.

Rock. I did. The Dr seemed amused hat I knew about it and asked if I was in health. Haha😂

She offered mirena coil and I said I wasn't keen so asked about the ablation.

She said there are risks though as I have had c section.

Just seen your update- well done and glad it was all ok!

I had a hysteroscopy in Jan due to thickened womb lining. I had a biopsy, which was thankfully all clear and had a Mirena coil fitted. It's been hit and miss, 3 months of bleeding after fitting, then 3 months of no bleeding, but since the end of July ive had ongoing bloody discharge, not heavy but really irritating.
I went back to GP last month and she gave me progesterone in the hope it might reset thing, but she wasn't overly hopeful. It's made no difference so I need to go back and I am expecting a re-referral. I'm 50, so probably peri-menopausal, but she did say it could carry on for some years yet.
Not sure what options are left, she did say 20 years ago I'd have been offered a hysterectomy but nowadays they only do this in more serious circumstances. GP is fab and adamant its not ok to put up with it, she may suggest ablation I think.
Not sure I've been a lot of help, but you're not alone!

When you had the coil fitted what was it like?

It sounds like ablation might be the step Cashmere.

Sorry to hear mirena has been rubbish for you. Did you have 3 months continuous bleeding? You must have been exhausted.

Did your gp offer to take it out? Did she say why you have the discharge? Has the coil made difference to the lining of the womb?

Sorry for the quiz!

SoOver I've loved my mirena. Had two back to back and had second removed last week just to see what happens as if only for it for heavy periods. So far so good... it's been nothing but great for me. I had minor spotting for three months at period time then no periods at all for the remaining 5 years.

SoOverItNow · 26/09/2016 13:47

That sounds great DooWhop!

The reason I've not felt keen on mirena is because I've read lots of threads where people have suffered bad side effects like low mood, weight gain and anxiety, so it's really good to hear a positive experience. Dr seemed to think it would solve my issues.

How was the procedure to put it into place/remove it?

It's not pleasant but if you can go during a period it's not bad as your cervix will be slightly open. Mine wasn't as I don't have periods and it was a strange sensation but not painful.

RockNRollNerd · 26/09/2016 19:54

Despite the fact it didn't work for me long term, do give the mirena a go. In fact they will probably pretty much insist before they'll consider ablation I suspect. The mirena worked pretty well for about 2 years for me but then I started getting absolutely murderous PMT for some reason. I tried to stick it out but given that I was still having regular as clockwork full periods I decided I really couldn't hack it. For the first year and a bit though it did work well - my periods were much lighter although still definitely full periods and I had pain levels I could handle.

Ultimately you have to have something that works for you - Mirena may well be it but if it isn't or you really don't want it then do try to push for ablation.

Thanks everyone so much for sharing your experiences. It's really helpful.

I think you're right Rock. I will have to give the coil a shot. I think that's going to be the way forward if my biopsy is ok. I have follow up appt in a month so I'm guessing that's what they will recommend.

Thanks for the tip about getting it put in during period DooWhop. Do they use the camera when placing it?

Yes it was pretty much non-stop for 3 months, but the consultant did say it would take a good couple of months to settle. Having said that, it isn't as heavy now as before it was fitted, so I presume the lining is nowhere near as thick. My GP did offer to remove it, but the issue is that it's likely that the womb lining would re-thicken, so I'd be back to where I started. She did a swab on the discharge, so I need to go back for the results, but she said it was unlikely to be an infection.
I will go back next week and will ask for another scan and re-referral - maybe ablation is the way forward.
I had my Mirena fitted at the same time as the hysteroscopy, so I can't advise on that, as I had a local anaesthetic at the time.
I hope all goes well with your tests

Owllady · 29/09/2016 10:12

Will the consultant do your mirena fitting?
I had a hysteroscopy with local yesterday and I have very similar to you! I have v heavy periods and mid and irregular bleeding. I have a few submucosal fibroids, a polyp that has been removed and sent off and thickening of the lining of the back wall of the womb, so a biopsy has been sent off for that too. He then fitted a mirena at the end.
It didn't hurt but I feel really emotional about it all today.

Update: just had follow up appointment with lovely gynaecologist yesterday and have been offered an ablation😀

Whoop! They will book me in for a January. I actually cried. So relieved that someone actually cares and recognises how shit it has been and says I don't have to put up with it anymore.
