Hi!
I have been suffering with some pretty debilitating headaches recently and I wondered if anyone could give me any clues as to what they are ...
They usually wake me up at around 5am ... and then get streadily worse throughout the day. The cover mainly the right side of my head with a sharp pain around my right eye that makes me want to walk around with that eye shut. The tendon on my neck that goes up into my head also really hurts and I feel the need to be constantly massaging that and my right temple. If I bend down and stand up again it hurts even more ... when they happen I am walking around with my shoulders hunched and my eyes squinting as if I am looking at the sun.
Paracetamol doesn't touch it and today I had Iboprofen which didn't do anything either ...
And then at around 5pm it miraculously disappears and I feel fine again. It is almost like a hangover but without the fun the night before .
I went to the doctor last week when I had 4 in 7 days and he said it could be migraines or stress ... and just prescribed the Iboprofen ... and that was it ...
I don't feel particularly stressed ... although I am tired (4 month old b/fing baby) ...
I have never had headaches like this before ...
Any ideas????

I know it sounds silly but are you drinking enough WATER. Dehydration can bring on terrible headaches. Make sure you are drinking several litres a day.

Thank Jampot ...
I do try to drink lots of water ... probably not litres and litres though ...
I try to do my 8 glasses a day ... I get very thirsty when breastfeeding so I always have a big glass during feeds ...

BTW ... the doctor said Iboprofen was ok for breastfeeding but the chemist said I had to take it 2 hours before feeding the baby ("Will you tell the baby that?" I asked her ... )

Gohsty - They sound like tension headaches with the pain in your neck too. I'd go with the Ibuprofen and screw what the Chemist said. I find the GP and Chemist contradict each other quite often. The GP has loads more experience, the Chemists tend to just read what the manufacturer says..... which is always too cautious anyway.
It's the last thing you need when you have a new baby and a young child..... hope they clear up soon.

sounds like neuralgia.. have a look at \linknhsdirect.nhs.uk/en.asp?TopicID=326&AreaID=477&LinkID=80{} or a migraine. Boots do tension headache relief tablets that are good if thats what it is. I used to take pink migraleve tablets, then if they dont help you take the yellow one. they were really good. A lot depends on if you are breastfeeding though. If you are then it is quite possibly as the others say, dehydration.

ok that didnt work....will try again...neuralgia link this

i personally think that as there is a pattern you should go back to the doctor, especially if the ibuprofen is not helping either.

it could well be stress, hormone imbalance, dehydration, tiredness. however, 4 in 7 days, all the same seems alot and i dont think its good enough to be sent off with painkillers that are not doing the trick.

i do know that syndol, over the counter, are very effective. i do not know about contra indications (i.e. bf) and they are quite strong, so if you take them, make sure you arent going anywhere, cos they can make you very drowsy... but they have a muscle relaxant in them, so sorts out that big muscle in your neck.

As an almost lifelong migraine sufferer, I feel for you, Ghosty! It's horrible to be laid so low by a headache. Have you looked at this Migraine charity site? They offer support with all sorts of headache, not just migraine. Get well soon.

I know it sounds a bit silly but have you thought it could be due to the pollen count ie. hayfever. I get headaches when it is high not always accompanied by sore eyes, runny nose etc. I think it would be well worth taking an antihistimine if you can (don,t know the position vis a vis breastfeeding).

Have you had a cold recently?
Sinusitis can give you painful headaches, which do get worse if you lean forward or bend over-also can cause the eye to be painful.
