Did anyone see it? I was out but dh waqtched and informs me that it doesn't matter what he eats cos your body produces cholesterol anyway and i think he's got it all wrong, how can all other advice say eat well, fruit veg, fibre, exercise, less sugar and salt and all that be wrong?

all that other advice is still good for you (for other reasons) - just not sure it has a huge impact on cholesterol (didn't see it either but was reading something similar the other day).

blusher · 31/01/2007 11:34

What programme was it? Didn't see it but interested.

Bekks · 31/01/2007 11:36

There are different types of cholestrol - some is good and vital for proper functioning of your body, and some is bad and gets laid down in fatty deposits in your arteries. The bad stuff comes from animal fats meat, butter, cheese etc. When you have a cholestrol test they measure the good and the bad separately I think.

There are probably people who can explain this better than me, but your dh is mostly wrong and shouldn't use it as an excuse to eat lots of rubbish!

blusher, it was on at 8pm yesterday and that's as much as i know, looked on the bbc website but it doesn't give uch away there either.

Dh is a consumer of junk when not closely supervised and wil insist on sugar on cereal in front of dds. I have educated them well, though and they know this is barmy behaviour with empty calories - yeughh!

Yes Bekks - HDL and LDL

HDL is the 'good' one, if you like and LDL is the 'bad' one

Piffle · 31/01/2007 14:59

my dad also thought what your dh thought and sadly failed to make changes in enough time and died of a massive heart attack aged 49 with his arteries being totally blocked
His cholesterol was 6.2 and he had reduced it over 7 mths to 5, but was not enough.
I urge anyone blase about lifestyle changes for health reasons to think about the long term.

breadgirl · 31/01/2007 15:03

I worry sometimes and i think i should get my cholesterol level checked. The only exercise i do is walking to pick up dd from school.
I know this isn't to do with cholesterol, but found out an in-laws aunt is dying of cancer, which was only diagnosed a few months ago. It's so so sad, as she's such a happy and hard working person, who is also a mum of 4, youngest which is only 2. So tragic!

Mercy · 31/01/2007 15:20

Piffle, my dad had high cholesterol and also died of a heart attack about a year after being diagnosed. He was 50.

Breadgirl, exercise can help improve your cholesterol level.

I totally agree with Piffle's advice.
