Wheezing, doc says can't diagnose asthma in a baby, BUT...

Ds2(6m) has a bad cold with a wheeze, the doctor says that he might have had bronchiolitis.

The doc said that even though asthma cannot be diagnosed in a baby, given that dh has asthma and ds2 has a wheeze, it wouldn't be a complete surprise if ds2 went on to develop asthma.

Anyone have any experience of wheezy babies that went on to develop asthma, or not?

My DS1 is 3 and has started wheezing over the last 2 mths - he has an inhaler which does help but he has not been diagnosed with asthma.

However I am astmatic and he also has excema - poor thing!

As a baby he always got that croupy cough when he had a cold, which DS2 never had.

PanicPants · 30/01/2007 20:44

They said this about ds (17months, he now has an inhaler which he occasionally needs. Both dp and I are asthmatic.

Wallace · 30/01/2007 20:57

Thanks. He has been given an inhaler, which seems to work sometimes (the doc explained because he is so young the inhaler won't be very effective)

So far he doesn't have excema, which dh also has. Dd has excema, but no asthma (so far, she is 5 now) Ds1 has neither.

dd1 wasnt wheezy that much as a small baby, couple of breezy episodes, but not major. she has asthma, been on regular pumps since just under a year old.

dd2 had some very bad wheeziness as a baby, she went grey one night, and was in and out of hospital. she isnt asthmatic.

Wallace · 30/01/2007 21:09

thanks misdee, that's what I want to hear that he won't necessarily develop asthma , that must have been scary though.

Are you or dh asthmatic?

OP posts:
misdee · 30/01/2007 21:13

dh is/was asthmatic (his asthma cleared up once he had the LVAD put in which makes me wonder if he had asthma).

dd2 wheeziness was a lot more scary that dd1 asthma attacks. she had brocholistis as well.

SlightlyMadScientist · 30/01/2007 21:23

DTDs both had bronchiolitis when they were 18m ish. They are nearly 6 now and do not have asthma (that we know of) - although they can struggle to shift chesty coughs.

Don't worry about it - see what the future brings and deal with it then.

The DTDs consultant told us that it is not unusual for the lungs to take 6m to completely recover from a bout of bronchiolitis.

charliecat · 30/01/2007 21:25

I find myself posting this on these threads a lot Must share my experience though. DD2 was wheezy and chest and coughing and was given an inhaler and the doctor told me to get rid of all the teddies in the bedroom/hoover regularly etc etc, get rid of dust holding objects.
And it worked. Massively. Give it a try. No inhaler or wheezyness at all now.

Wallace · 30/01/2007 21:27

gosh 6 months...the doc did say it may take a while.

I don't know why I am so worried about the possibilty of asthma. Prabably something to do with the thought of all the cleaning I would have to do to keep the house free of dustmites

lol charliecat - cross posted

Wallace · 30/01/2007 21:40

Noooooooooooooooo...anything but that, I beg you

Seriously though, we do have laminate floors, and try to keep our bedroom (ds2 is in with us) as clutter free as poss because of dh.

I do need to make friends with my duster

charliecat · 30/01/2007 21:42

I am more likely to repaint a room than dust it

Wallace · 30/01/2007 21:43

LOL, thought I was the only one

There are different types of asthma. Not all asthmatics are allergic to dust mites.

At a guess if bronchiolitis does trigger asthma it wouldn't be allergic asthma anyway.

The consulant did say up to 6m. They were only on meds for about 10-14 days IIRC - but the consultant could certainly tell that DTD2 had had it 3m later. The GP treated the bronchiolitis (didn't quite get to hosp) - saw consultant for a routine checkup wrt prematurity 3 m later and she knew lung function was compromised without being told.

As I said - you can't do anything now. Don't worry about it until asthma actually develops.

DS2 spent 5 days in hospital with bronchiolitis at 9 weeks. He went on to be a so-called happy wheezer until 13 months when he began having bad asthma attacks with every cold. In the UK they prefer to call this 'viral-induced wheeze', but in Singapore where we were living at the time they called it 'asthma'.

However, he is not sensitive to dust etc, and still only gets asthma with a cold. He is 5 now and is still wheezy with every cold but it is much less serious than it was.

DH is also asthmatic and DS1 gets occasional wheezy episodes.

aideesmum · 31/01/2007 09:36

My ds 23 months often gets a wheeze when he has a cold/ virus and apparantely this is quite normal (so say the docs). We have inhalers just in case but he never gets wheezy unless he has a virus!

My son had RSV bronchiolitis at 4 months and was hospitalised. This virus is known to cause asthma/wheezyiness for up to 10 years. He is now 15 and fit and well, a big strapping lad. He had bad asthma until he was about 4 or 5 and has steadily improved to the point where he really doesn't need the inhaler any more. I always encouraged him to do lots of sports and awimming to develop his chest muscles. He plays rugby and does martial arts with no problems. We did all the dust reducing things and increased his preventer inhaler at the first sign of a cold and I am sure this helped to keep it under control.HTH

Wallace · 01/02/2007 21:04

Thanks all, I will try not to worry about asthma just yet.

Poor little lad still isn't well. He isn't ill as such, but not well either. He is much more miserable than usual and wants me all the time. He is still so croaky, and wakes up crying alot (a really creaky cry)

Think I'd better go hoover the bedrooms ...

Dd2 was hardley ever wheezy, just had a constant cough and chest infection and would cough until she was sick nearly every day and night.
Eventually got her diagnosed as asthmatic when we took her to the a&e of a different hospital and teerfully refused to move until someone told me what the hell was wrong with her.
Doc walks in listens to her chest, takes some notes and says 'well she is clearly asthmatic'.
Could have kissed him as thats what I'd known for ages.

Ds was a very wheezy baby, always had a crackly chest but was diagnosed as a happy wheezer as basically he was wheezy but with no ill side effects. They said it was very common in chubby babies LOL. He was given an inhaler but tbh we hardley ever used it.
He does still get very wheezy though with colds now (age 4) and so he has a salbutamol inhaler just for then.
