Help - The most painful nappy rash ever!

spikeycat · 08/06/2004 10:12

DS1 (18 Months) has got terrible nappy rash - having never had it before. My dp decided to be a cheapy and try and get away with buying tesco's own nappies instead of pampers - this is the only thing that could have caused it as it started straight away.
His bottom is very read and sore, and he had blister around his anus (sorry!) which have now popped leaving open sores which rub together as he walks.
For the last todays he has been with out a nappy playing in the garden and its made no difference. When ever I have put a nappy on him he cries horribly and keeps repeating "all done, all done, all done". Has anyone got any top tips on this, I have tried everything - should I take him to the docs? (my health visitor has left and no one has replaced her!). Ta x

NHS Direct here hope he's better very very soon...

Soapbox · 08/06/2004 10:28

Is it red bumpy/spotty looking around the big blisters. If so this is probably thrush. You can put normal canestan cream on it (for grown up thrush) and this will clear it up virtually overnight.

Good luck - its awful when they have sore bots!

shrub · 08/06/2004 10:28

i would go to the docs asap. for future reference the best cream i've found is 'weleda nappy change cream' - no chemicals works brilliantly and very quick at getting rid of rash. buy at health food store or internet. hope he's feeling better soon.

When ds2 had really horrible nappy rash it in fact turned out to be thrush. He had chicken pox at the same time so it was really unpleasant. Thinking it was nappy rash I tried everything I could think of and the GP even prescribed antibiotics. When it occurred to me it could be thrush I used a thin layer of canesten on him and it cleared up instantly.

I think you can recognise it's thrush if it's kind of white and creamy on top.

Decmum · 08/06/2004 10:30

Olive oil...we used it from day 1 and have never had a rash. I also read in the Mumsnet book that this is a great cure when the rash has appeared.
Sounds dreadful....poor u and poor baby.
Good luck!

I have only ever used zinc and caster oil cream on him, my last health visitor (i called her at home) has sugested vasaline? Thanks everyone!

Metanium. Possibly the best nappy rash cream in the world -- ever. Don't just take my word for it, read these reviews .

Now more widely available than it used to be independent pharmacies stock it, and I think nowadays Boots and Sainsburys may have it too. Don't be put off by the weird metallic smell and strange texture it really works.

Soapbox · 08/06/2004 10:59

Spikey cat - you do really need to know what the rash is before using vaseline. If it is thrush the moistness of vaseline may make it a lot worsem, as it is a fungal disease which thrives in damp conditions.

Does it sound like it could be thrush - spotty and bumpy round the main site of the blisters?

spikeycat · 08/06/2004 11:02

he just came and told me he had done a poo poo and I changed him and it seems (fingers crossed) to be a bit better. He is playing out with no nappy. That may help.....

hope it's getting better, spikey. this is the kind of thing most GPs are happy to treat over the phone - the ultimate nappy rash cream (when even Metanium won't cut the mustard anymore!) is Timodine - available only on prescription and contains an antibiotic, hydrocortisone and an antifungal treatment. It clears up even the most awful nappy rash within a a day, I've found.

Anchovy · 08/06/2004 11:38

Timodine really is the best. DD (8 months) had really bad nappy rash a few weeks ago which was raw and weeping and she was inconsolable. Our excellent GP gave me some timodine and that together with a couple of afternoons of her "going commando" in the back garden really sorted it out. BTW, GP said that people can be really sniffy about Timodine as it is seen as lazy prescribing by drs as it covers so many things, but his view was that it worked, so he can live with it!

gloworm · 08/06/2004 11:45

we experimented with different nappies and ds always ended up with nappy rash unless we used pampers. they sent you tons of money off vouchers if you register online...so they dont work out any more expensive then most other brands.

also add a drop of tea tree oil to what ever nappy cream you use...it clears all rashes, its antibacterial and anti-viral and anti-fungal.

SofiaAmes · 08/06/2004 23:45

I had the opposite experience, the only time my ds ever got nappy rash was when I used Pampers. I found that he had no troubles at all with Tesco's, Asda's and Sainsbury's own brands. My dd has a very sensitive bottom and again never agreed with Pampers or Huggies. She does well with the Asda nappies, but still occasionally gets nappy rash/thrush. I usually put canestan on one side and sudocream on the other and see which one works overnight...if it's thrush then it'll be the former, otherwise the latter. Saves me the time and trouble of going to the gp.

Bornworrier · 09/06/2004 07:31

Metanium - works a treat. The only thing I ever use.

hoxtonchick · 09/06/2004 08:31

Definitely metanium. You can get the GP to prescribe it for you if you ask.

smellymelly · 09/06/2004 08:36

DD always has really bad nappy rash, and I use Metanium, if that won't get rid then I use canestan and it clears it within a day,

Have to say I use Tesco's nappies and they are fine, even the really cheap plastic ones!! It is only dd's poo that gives her a rash.

Try letting him out in the garden with no nappy on at all. Fresh air also works wonders!

katzguk · 09/06/2004 08:52

another metanium user here.

DD had horrenus nappy rash which we ended up seeing the GP for got metanium on repeat perscription and the GP uses it himself on his children. However we discovered it was strawberries causing it, no more really bad blisters since she doesn't have strawberries

poppyseed · 09/06/2004 11:38

how is he now? I use Metanium too and the doc has prescribed Canesten HC in the past, both of which clear the worst within 2 days if it's really bad. Metanium clears redness overnight and is fab for teething sorebottys!

bundle · 09/06/2004 12:06

metanium here too. but be careful where you keep it - dd1 plastered it all over her face (we'd been doing lots of sunscreen previous to this) and it got in her eyes & I had to take her to A&E because it contains titanium, pretty powerful stuff. hth

alison222 · 09/06/2004 20:12

Another metanium fan.
DD had v bad rash - open sores and pharmacist said she teeded to see the doctor. She also prescibed soemthing whci was ant septic andti fungal and anti inflamatory to help it heal fast - well worth the trip

spikeycat · 10/06/2004 10:46

thanks to everyone who replied, I think we are over the worse, its still a little spotty but no open sores anymore. However, so traumatised has he been that he is now terrified of nappy changes, he clasps his legs together so tightly and keeps saying "all done all done" over and over again.
I expect he will get over it in time, little monkey.
