What i mean is that she will most likely be having a blood test anyway, so should i ask them to check that aswell.

From what i have read of Coeliacs she does have a few symptoms. Obviously this could just be me trying to fir her ill health to something, but surely it's worth getting it checked.
Is it ??

Write down anything which has been suggested and which match some or all of her symptoms. If you then raise each of these possibilities, at least then you'll know that you brought it to the attention of the medics. They can always discount it or test for it.

I am taking DD2 to the docs today for the same reason, she has about 4 of the symptoms of Coeliacs and I am not being fobbed off today (not in the mood, got Social services coming later to assess DS and DD1s needs )

but surely an initial blood test will indicate if it possibly is a problem.

hope today goes well for you.

Fio2 · 08/06/2004 09:56

my daughter was checked at my request, no arguments at all. They just did it

nutcracker · 08/06/2004 12:44

Right, i'm a nervous wreck today. I hate having to suggest things to docs, especially as they look at me like i'm going potty.

Anyway, after reading up somemore on coeliacs, i have decided that she does definatly have a few symptoms of it.

Anemia
Weight loss (only slight)
Flatulence (boy can she fart)
Irritability/behavioural probs
Lethargy
Depression

So should i ask do you think, or am i just being neurotic ??
They will be doing a blood test anyway i think.

Also i only realised the other day that she has always complained of stomach ache, but she did it that often that i just though it was her standard response to a question or that she was trying to get out of something.

If ever i say whats wrong, i could garuntee her answer would be either 'i'm tired' or i've got tummy ache'.

Just got back from the doctors and they are going to test for Coeliacs, have to get a blood test and stool sample for them.....
How did it go with your DD nutty?

nutcracker · 08/06/2004 13:12

Haven't been yet 4pm.

Glad you got taken seriously.
Thing is with me, that if they dismiss it i won't know what to say to make them change their minds.

I just think they may as well test her for it (blood test) if she's having one anyway.

Mieow, how old is your Dd and what syptoms does she have ??

OP posts:
mieow · 08/06/2004 13:45

She is 2 1/2 and has a swollen tummy, that starts flat in the morning but gets bigger as the day goes on, she has pale, soft stools, looks tired all the time, and is very irritable, she is windy too,

mieow · 08/06/2004 13:46

oh and she screams in pain at night

nutcracker · 08/06/2004 13:50

Oh poor thing.

See that why i think they will dismiss it with my Dd, cos she doesnt have pale stools. She has done, but only every now nd again.
She does get constipated quite often though, which is apparently a syptom.

Thing is alot of the stuff i've read reckons that alot of children who don't develop it as a baby often have few symptoms and it acn be hard to get it diagnosed.

I know i could be clutching at straws but when the nursery first raised there concerns about Dd and i started looking into her sypmtoms Coeliacs sort of hit me in the face when i read it.
I'd always dismissed it because i thought it was found in babies.

OP posts:
nutcracker · 08/06/2004 20:36

Hmmm well i asked about it and the doc said that it isn't that.
She said if she had coeliacs then she would of had symptoms as a baby and that she would have bad dihorea after eating bread.

From what i have read, all of that is wrong isn't it ???

All the info i've looked at says that it can develop at any age. It may of always been there but something can trigger it off.

Anyway, they think she may of had a virus which she is struggling to recover from. They are going to test her for it in August if she is no better.

Nutty, DD has always had allergies, but they have always resulted in hives, she hasn't had a reaction for a while, but she is defo. showing signs of Coeliacs. I have been chatting to someone who has a daughter with Coeliacs and her daughter only shows two signs of the disease, but she knows someone who has a dd with very similar signs to DD2. I think you can get Coeliacs after an illness too.

mieow · 08/06/2004 21:24

Also DD2s allergies only started after I stopped breastfeeding and she was put on bottles, I had to change her milk as it caused her to get very bad nappies.

AnnieG · 08/06/2004 21:32

My eldest son is 23 and has only recently been diagnosed with coeliac disease. He has been underweight since he was a toddler and I asked the doctor about this frequently throughout his childhood, but my worries were always dismissed. He has never had any marked gastric problems, but suffered with anaemia several times and was always tired.
He was eventually diagnosed with a blood test followed by endoscopy. His consultant at the hospital says he has probably had it since birth.
It is apparenly very underdiagnosed in children.

nutcracker · 08/06/2004 21:55

Yep thats what i had read Annie.
I am not saying i am right and she is wrong, but her explanation seemed to be very limited to me.

Oh well guess i'll just have to wait until her next appointment whilst paying close attention to everything.

Dont be put off asking for the blood test, Nutcracker-it is such a simple thing and is apparently extremely reliable.
I just wish I had been more insistent when my son was younger, but the doctors were always so dismissive, saying he was just one of those "naturally thin" children.
