Quick question(or two) - Is medised available over the counter and do you think it works?

Just think it may help ds(8 mo) settle at night. He currently has a cold and is teething and (imo)is not getting enough sleep.Hes never ever slept more than 6hours at night (only once)and usually wakes every couple of hours. I don't think it's a feeding issue either.

Yes and yes.

Have used it once or twice on dd when she was very bad with the cold. It doesn't solve everything but I think it helped her sleep a bit better.

serenity · 29/01/2007 13:26

Yes, you can get it over the counter, and yes it works (on my Dcs anyway). I'm not sure what the minimum age is though. Tyxilyx (sp?) night time is good too.

2nervesleft · 29/01/2007 13:28

Its a yes and yes here too. Obviously check with your pharmacist that it is suitable for your LO, but when my two have a cold or are teething it has given them relief to get a decent sleep and made us all as a family slightly happier.

geogteach · 29/01/2007 13:29

Yes it works and can use at that age, we had it when DS2 had the pox.

Mercy · 29/01/2007 13:30

Didn't work for dd tbh.

I think there's 2 versions - one for babies, and one for 2 years plus. Could be wrong but tell your pharmacist how old your ds is if you decide buy it.

Furball · 29/01/2007 13:31

the from 3 months version is a very good cold reliver - better imho than the older 2 years version which for ds did nothing.

I'd reccommend it

WideWebWitch · 29/01/2007 13:31

Yes it is and yes it did help my dd to sleep when she was smaller and had a cold.

Longlegs1972 · 29/01/2007 13:31

Yes and Yes

goingfor3 · 29/01/2007 13:34

It makes both of my kids really really hyper before knocking them out. I tried it twice and then poured it down the sink. It was like they had been possesed, espescially the older one.

inanidealworld · 29/01/2007 13:44

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll try it

Oh, you might need to check at what age you can give it
IIRC they withdrew the one that was suitable for babies under 12 months a couple of years ago because it was "being abused"
Sorry to be the bearer of potential bad news, but ask at the pharmacy.
The formulation for older babies does work very well on a coldy, non-sleeping child though.

Scootergirl · 29/01/2007 13:50

I got mine in Boots and it works like a charm on non-sleeping DS, the same age as yours, shen he's got a cold. I do have to stop myself giving it to him EVERY night though as he's a terrible sleeper
Maybe the two of them are in cahoots...

NbgsYellowFeathers · 29/01/2007 13:50

Yes you can still get it over the counter.
I've been giving it to ds who is 23 weeks but it doesnt seem to have an effect on sleeping.

inanidealworld · 29/01/2007 13:51

Oh really? That doesn't sound too good.

inanidealworld · 29/01/2007 13:52

sorry x posts.

I admit I am secretly hoping it may give me a chance of a good night's sleep as well

worleygig · 29/01/2007 14:01

it did the trick om my 6months old but it tyastes really horrid and in the end i had to mix it with his food or he was sick/gagged when i gave it to him

3andnomore · 29/01/2007 14:09

My 2 younger ones never ever would take calpol, so, when they need something then medised is very good and when they are very bad then it's great to use it in regulsr intervals with nurofen/ibrufen for kids...i.e. you can give painrelief every 3 hours...nurofen at one time, after 3 hours medised and so on....

Scootergirl · 29/01/2007 18:20

DS has a bad cold so have given him 3ml Medised tonight. He normally wakes up at least four times a night so I'll let you know if it worked tomorrow!

helenhismadwife · 29/01/2007 18:51

it didnt make my dd's sleep any better but it seemed to make them more comfortable and less grumpy.

danceswithnewboots · 29/01/2007 18:52

yes and yes. Used to really help my dcs sleep. Now they both refuse to take it...it does taste vile though.

NbgsYellowFeathers · 29/01/2007 18:54

Well ideal world.
The first night he woke only once at 3am which was a big improvement from every hour but then after that it just went all over the place again.
He's been having it on and off for a while because he's had broncilitis and is now teething and I havent had a good nights sleep from him since lord knows when.

WriggleJiggle · 29/01/2007 18:59

Yes and yes. Wonderful stuff, it knocks her out when she is full of cold and struggling. (dd 9 months)
