dd has thrush, I feel so bad

dd (9mths) has always had a lovely peachy bum, no sore rashes at all. Last week she developed a very red bum which I put down to being left in a pooy nappy unknowingly. Over the weekend it got worse so I went to see hv who diagnosed thrush. I was quite taken aback, I,ve never has thrush before but over the last couple of days I've been a bit itchy and sore 'down there' to. So it seems I have given dd thrush even though I consider my hygiene and hand washing almost obsesive. We have been given cream etc so should clear up soon but just feel bad it has happened. Has anyone else had dd with thrush? How long did it take to clear? Did it reccur?

dd had fungal rash in nappy area when she was about 6 months. Don't blame yourself, it isn't necessarily the case that you gave it to her. With a prescribed cream it cleared up within a few days and she hasn't had it since (now coming up 3).

Yes,yes and yes to all of the above and like you I felt bad too though my dd is nearly 4 now. She often seems to be uncomfortable in that area but it isn't necessarily caused by you having thrush. There are many causes for this yeast imbalance. Perhaps she's sensitive to soap bubbles in her bath, or perhaps her clothing isn't 'breathable', or whatever other reason. The cream should clear it pretty quickly. We find the best way to keep it at bay is to just clean the area every night (after her bath) with some cotton wool and water, dry it gently and on the appearance of anything suspicious, I just use a little camillosan cream.
I hope your dd is ok - don't feel bad though (I know that's difficult). She'll be right as rain in a few days. Hope this helps and I hope I haven't alarmed you - it could easily be a one off thing - our dd is of the age where all natural curiosity must be satisfied and we think she may sometimes 'explore' that area with not the cleanest of fingers therefore not helping her discomfort!

She could have given it to you! I wouldn't worry about it. My ds got thrush a few times and my dd has had it numerous times. I didn't have it any of those times. Like with adults, it's caused by ph changes which can be due to diet, sweaty bums (happens with nappies sometimes no matter how often you change them) and just seasonal too. Please don't feel guilty. By the way, Canestan works on babies too.

Feeling a bit better already, had been feeling like a crap mum but now feeling a bit more rational. dd is baby no 1 and I always try do everything right. My mum has said not to beat myself up about it, far worse thing could and will happen!

auntynon, don't blame yourself. I thought my DD (2.5 yrs) had a vaginal infection as she was a bit pongy and I did blame myself thinking I had not been washing her enough. But the GP said that little girls are much more prone to these infections than women are as they don't have the hormones that keep the vagina acidic and fight off bugs.
