Red pinprick marks?

Haily111 · 28/01/2007 14:48

Hello, i noticed my dd had a few red little marks on her chest yesterday (not in a specific area) i didnt think a lot of it as she is absolutely fine in every other way (happy eating etc) but today she has quite a few more, any ideas? Am a bit worried i.e. meningitis, tried to do the glass test but they are very faint spots, i am trying to get a picture of it, maybe you can ease my worries....

viral rash? heat rash?

Haily111 · 28/01/2007 14:55

I cant get a picture. They are very faint. So lulumama is it nothing to worry about? I thought maybe chickenpox, she hasn't got a fever though

sometimes a viral rash comes out after the illness itself, has she been ill before this?

belgo · 28/01/2007 14:57

CHicken pox spots will get bigger in size and turn into a blister after a day or so - it is possible to have this and not really be ill.

Could it be a reaction to new clothes?

Haily111 · 28/01/2007 14:59

No she hasnt changed any clothes really (i mean new ones) she hasnt been ill recently. Am thinking maybe chickenpox. But they started yesterday and no big blotches yet (apart from one on her 'youknowwhatsits')

Could be chicken pox, take her to the doctors for a diagnosis.

lulumama · 28/01/2007 15:08

doctors, possibly...or call NHS direct

filthymindedvixen · 28/01/2007 15:09

It doesn't sound like meningitis if the rash started yesterday and there are no other symproms so please don't worry. If she has no other symptoms at all, could be an allergy. Have tou recently changed soap powder brands? Or bubble bath etc?

With chickenpox, the rash usually comes afte a couple of days of cough and runny nose.

Haily111 · 28/01/2007 15:11

Could it then maybe be an allergy to food? As that is the only thing i have changed, i have tried new things out, but how long would it take for the rash to appear after she's eaten it?
(Thanks fmv for saying not meningitis!)

is the rash raised? And how old is she? Could be a food reaction?

jalopy · 28/01/2007 15:16

If it doesn't disappear using a glass, you need to get it checked. Pinprick rashes should not be ignored because sometimes they are are sign of something more serious. Having said that my daughter had this due to a viral illness.
Ring NHS direct and they will advise.

Haily111 · 28/01/2007 15:23

Ok shall ring NHS. it is slightly raised (i.e. i can feel it if i run my finger over it. My dd is 8 months.

Hailly111, its not that likely because it is fairly rare, but have you considered Scarlet fever? My ds1 had this recently, he had a temp, terrible breath (starts as a throat infection), the kind of rash you described over his chest and very red cheeks. As it progressed he got a strawberry tongue as well

lulumama · 28/01/2007 15:26

let us know what they say x

filthymindedvixen · 28/01/2007 15:31

IIRC, The meningitis rash is NOT raised, it's under the skin if that puts your mind a little more at rest...

common childhood rashes

hullabaloo · 28/01/2007 15:43

Me and my DS get a rash like this as an allergic reaction when we take a certain kind of medicine. So possibly it is something she is allergic to?

Have just spoken to NHS direct. Their waiting list for someone to phone back is 5 hours, but the good thing is it isn't being treated as urgent as it does not sound like meningitis (as you said fmv) it isn't raised. She also said that usually the rash with meningitis is the last thing to appear so i would know well before then if my dd was really unwell. So at the moment the conclusion is maybe allergy or chickenpox. Now am wondering if i should still send her to nursery tomorrow or stay home. But i'll wait until they phone me back tonight...

Haily, if it is chickenpox, by tomorrow morning, the sports will have 'come out' and be blisters...and more spots will have appeared.
if not, prob not chickenpox.
HTH

Haily111 · 28/01/2007 17:16

I shall keep my eye one it this evening and tomorrow morning. So if it just an allergy she will be alright to go to nursery right?

My son is quite rashy and usually comes out in one when he has a sore throat, his tonsils are up or another type of infection. You would know if it was chicken pox.
