3yo DD has Scarletina

Just been to the local walk-in clinic. She has been advised alternate Calpol/Calprofen every 3 hours. Everything on the net says she should have antibiotics. Also she won't eat anything at all.
Anyone any experience as to what might help ...?

It isn't always treated with antibiotics, did they take a throat swab ?

minko · 27/01/2007 16:51

No, it was just a nurse and she didn't do any tests, just examined DD. She said she'd seen a case earlier in the week.

IME, I've never seen antibiotics used to treat scarletina, but I could be wrong

LIZS · 27/01/2007 16:54

it is n't that common but v contagious so if it is doing the rounds they may see several I suppose. Presumably she has a rash, swollen tongue , tonsillitis, fever ?

I had this as a child. I still remember how ill I felt, your poor dd. Hope she gets better soon.

minko · 27/01/2007 19:34

Everything I have now read says she should be on anitbiotics and kept away from other people for 5 days. The nurse at the walk-in clinic said it should only last 2-3 days and just to use Calpol etc... Don't know what to do since it's Saturday night and there's no doctor till Monday. Help!

AFAIK it is quite important to have this treated with antibiotics if the diagnosis is correct (surprised she didn't take a swab).

Why not try NHS Direct to query the treatment advice or out of hours GP service?

morningpaper · 27/01/2007 19:44

Definitely, I agree to ring NHS Direct

Many thanks for all your advice. I rang the out of hours doctor who said that yes, she ought to be on antibiotics, so I collected her prescription from the hospital and rushed round to the chemist who the doctor had phoned to get them to stay open for me! Just hope she feels a bit better soon, it's really horrible...

Glad that she's getting the right treatment. Sorry that my post was so unhelpful.
