hi - my 7.5 month old has bronchilitis and tonsilitis and is on antibiotics. He is not really eating or drinking ... he has had about 4 oz of milk today and a very small amount of food ... his fontanelle is slightly depressed but he seems alert when he is up, but just wants to sleep a lot. When should i worry about his lack of food/milk ... any advice much appreciated.

Concentrate on fluids. Is he still having wet nappies, is his skin supple on the back of his hands ? Bronchiolitis can be serious if they also get dehydrated, so offer him drinks little and often.

awwwwww.... i replied to you , but you had gone !! my poor little nephew

just lots and lots of fluids..has he had a wet nappy ?

give him a flannel to suck , or a medicine syringe with water in it to squirt in his mouth..read that tip from another mum on here...sounds like a good idea x

when is mum coming to stay?

taylormama · 26/01/2007 20:26

he just won't take anything. 2.5 oz of milk before bed in an hour! Tried to get him to suck on a flannel in the bath - LULU - mum coming tomorrow ...

Hope he's OK both mine had this as babies and both ended up in hospital. They get extra tired hence the slowness/difficulty in feeding and not taking much liquid.

I was always told to check and see whether they were drawing in between the ribs as this was an indication of breathing difficulties.

I think if in doubt take them to A &E esp if breathing difficulties. They may need help with feeding/breathing eg oxygen due to the nature of the illness.

Hope that helps and is not too alarmist.

thanks citylover..will make sure taylormama sees that advice

Hi taylormama

I ended up in hosp with dd2 who is 6 months. If you are worried i would go to a&e.We were lucky and were sent home but some babies are really ill with bronchilitis.Might be better to get ds checked out.

My dd is still unwell but is feeding again.Doc told me a bottlefed baby should be taking half of their "normal" feeds.

HTH

Sorry should have said we were in hosp this week with bronchilitis. Is he taking the medicine ok?

taylormama · 27/01/2007 10:15

hi all - he did have breathing difficulties on wednesday and we did end up in A & E ... he was borderline so we decided to take him home so he would be more comfy. He seems slightly better today but still not eating a lot - his urine is darker than usual ... but has no other indications of dehydration. Will keep a close eye on him today ... he is taking the medication and i hope this will make his throat feel better so he can drink more.

Taylormama, hope your ds is on the mend...dd had bronchiolitis at 4 weeks old (just before Xmas) and was very sick in hospital for ten days, but is fine now: I know how miserable it is to see them struggling to eat and breathe.

Hang in there, sounds like you're doing a great job of looking after him - hope he's all better soon. xxx

Elibean · 27/01/2007 10:20

ps am sure they told you, but just in case: its a ten day illness (apart from lingering cough) and the fifth day is usually the worst. If he's past that, he'll be on the mend - hope so

lulumama · 27/01/2007 11:10

taylormama..have MSNd you xxx

Elibean - thank you - sorry to hear that your DD was so unwell. We are on day 4 and they did say that he would get worse before he got better. Have just managed to get 3 oz of milk into him ... just hoping he continues to improve now
