How much "sickness" is normal for 11 mth old?

My DS has been a very happy healthy baby for his first 9 months. In the last couple of months he has been sick on average one meal every other day. I have started keeping a food diary and there doesnt seem to be any pattern to it. Sometimes he is sick in the middle of a solids meal, sometimes in the middle of a bottle and sometimes after he has been put down to bed at night. He never had a problem with reflux as a young baby. Has anyone had a baby that developed reflux problems late on?
As he is nearly a year now, I have tried him on ordinary cow's milk and this doesnt seem to have improved or worsened his reaction.
He has never had any problem with wind, so dont think it is this either.
He has been teething on and off, and I have blamed this for his sickness alot of the time, but at the back of my mind am worrying if he has some sort of digestive problem.
He is gradually putting on weight, although has always been at the low end of the centiles.
Am thinking now of booking appointment with GP but think that he will just dismiss it as DS is in otherwise great form and putting on weight.
Would really appreciate any suggestions, advice, or similar experiences.
Thanks.

Think I will go to GP and see what he says.

Hi Tutu, not sure what it could be really. My Ds did this a few times around the same age and i think i put it down to teething too.

I would take him to see the doc, it will help put your mind at rest.

Tutu,

My dd was also sick often at 11 months, from chewing on her hands and fingers. Could he possibly be gagging himself?

TuTu · 07/06/2004 21:01

Thanks for the replies. When he is sick it just starts with a couple of small coughs, and then he starts spewing up whatever he has just eaten. He doesnt have a cough the rest of the time.
I just cant understand why he is sick some times and not others. If he had a digestive problem then I would have thought he would be sick more frequently. On the other hand I dont think it can be normal be sick every other day.

My ds is the same age as yours and has recently gone through a phase of being a little bit sick as you describe. I have put it down to a combination of teething and chewing on his hands/gagging. He sometimes virtually seems to stick his fingers down his throat! My HV did mention that when they're teething they do swallow a lot of saliva and this can sometimes make them a bit sicky.

If he's putting on weight and is otherwise healthy and happy it's probably nothing but why not go and see your GP anyhow - put your mind at rest.

It's reassuring to hear this is not totally abnormal! Dont know what I would do without Mumsnet

Hi tutu ...
Has it got something to do with the consistency of certain foods maybe? My DS took a long time to get into lumpy food although he liked finger foods .... He used to be sick whenever he had milky things if the consistency was thick ... custard, cheese sauces, scrambled eggs. He still (at the age of 4) gags with mashed potato but he loves potatoes. He also, still, is very funny about the consistency of his weetabix. He has to eat it quickly before it gets soggy otherwise he gags ...
Just a thought ...

Yes Ghosty - he doesnt like lumpy food at all. He has 8 teeth so I keep thinking he should be able to manage something other than 100% mush, but anything lumpy nearly guarantees sickness. I had started thinking this was the main problem but then he would throw me by being sick on bottles as well! But I should probably just keep giving him smooth purees and stop myself from "trying" him with lumpier bits for another while. Being paraniod newbie mum had been afraid he might never let me pack the blender away!!

Hi Tutu ...
My HV had a go at me when DS was about 10 months because she said that I had missed the boat with lumpy food ... I was quite upset about it ... until my mum asked me how many 3 year olds did I know who still had pureed food and she assured me that eventually DS would get it!
I know that I did puree for far too long ... and that had something to do with it but I am sure that DS is just one of those people that is funny about consistency ... like I say, he still doesn't like certain things that have a particular consistency ...
How is your DS with finger food?

Ghosty - he will happily eat finger food but most times he is sick within a few minutes. So this morning for breakfast he ate a few slices of kiwi and then brought them back up again. I then spoonfed him ReadyBrek and he gobbled it up & kept it down!

Robinw - the only time he lies down within half hour of feed is after his night time bottle. I'll try giving it a bit earlier in the hope that he has it properly digested before putting him down for the night.

I got an appointment with the GP for next Tuesday, so will keep you posted. Thanks for all your advice.
