impetigo?

DS#2 has got a round red spot on his cheek - very small and it seems to be raw as if he's taken the top of. Noticed it yesterday when he came home from nursery. I'm a bit nervous as he's picked up headlice and threadworm there in the last few months. It's not got any bigger and it doesn't seem to hurt him - could it be impetigo or something less horrible?

thanks for any advice

If it gets bigger or does not seem to heal it may be impetigo. Probably the best thing to do is go to your GP anyway. It is better than worrying about what it might be!

Impetigo spots have a yellow head iirc.

if it is impetigo i've heard manuka honey applied topically can work wonders.

hunkeydorey · 26/01/2007 23:47

You'll know soon enough if it is impetigo as it will spread fairly quickly. Ds had it and it started as a spot, within a day or so, it was obviously much bigger and looked very sore. If it's not spreading I wouldn't worry too much at the moment. If you've got some fucidin cream though, that should nip anything in the bud.

You need to go to GP if it is worse in morning. Nursery need to be told if it is as it is very contagious. Hence why your ds has it.

Look up NHS direct to see the advice they give. it is bacterial and can be cleared up easily.

do not worry if it is, it will heal.

hepar sulph and graphites alternately dosage 30 3 of each a day not taken with food or toothpaste within half an hour.

this worked when antibiotics didn't.

Thanks for all the replies.

The spot hasn't got bigger, spread or developed a yellow centre however it didn't appear to be healing. A fact which was explained when I caught DS repeatedly scratching the top off it . Had a strict word and explained that if he didn't stop he'd have a big plaster stuck on his cheek. Seems to have worked but he still refused to have any cream on it - I was trying tea tree but nope! He just wiped it off.

I'm keeping an eye on it for the moment but I don't think it's impetigo.

BTW DS wasn't due to go back to nursery until today but I wouldn't have sent him anyway until I was confident it wasn't. I did get DH to mention it to the nursery and reassure them - they weren't bothered anyway (which might explain why the the other little problems seem to pass around so easily).
