He has had rotton cold for 10 days and started with this cough sunday night.
Gp said on monday it was upper airways so wasnt worried.

It's now so awful it wakes him up and makes him cry.

Real smokers' cough.

Dh not here tonight.
When should I worry?

Oh no, poor little thing. If it sounds really bad it might be croup (that sounds like a dog barking), I would call GP Direct.

mrsnoah · 24/01/2007 22:47

Am croup expert Saadia! Have 2 older ones who used to get it annually. Sounds like a seal doesnt it.

I am worrying about bronchilitis/chest infection I think?

Reassuringly he hasnt got a temp.

DS1 had a hacking cough when he was a similar age - that was an upper airway thing too. GP recommended putting a wet towel on the radiator in his room, or boiling a kettle in his room, to keep the atmosphere humid around him at night. It took 2 or 3 nights but it did work.

Jimjams2 · 24/01/2007 22:52

It's croup you need to watch out for- agree aboout steam. If it gets bad take him into the steamiest room in the house- we'ev used the bathroom (all hot taps running) and kitchen (kettle plus water boiling in pans + tumble dryer spoutiing steam everywhere) successfully before. It can clear up a barking cough quite quickly.

mrsnoah · 24/01/2007 22:53

Thanks.
I am sure its not croup. Its smokers cough not that hollow barking.

Am getting a bit worried now and am on my own tonuight.

definitely get the room humid. If you only have the one child boil up a saucepan of water and leave it in his room to cool down. Could put a few drops of tea tree or rosemary or eucalyptus in the water as well if you have any. (or a few drops on wet towels over the radiator- I've done that a lot).

worleygig · 24/01/2007 22:56

my 7 month ds2 has this cough also. (well so do ds1 and i) we all had colds which are pretty much gone byt left with this horrid tickly cough that wont go. the more we cough the more we have to cough again if you see what i mean.
i got some tixylix glycerin stuff from tescos, thats blackcurrant flav but seems to soothe his throat a bit.
he was sleeping 5-6 hours in a go till this now we are back to 1.5 hours again.. nightmare.

dp works nights so he doesnt have to deal with it either

Jimjams2 · 24/01/2007 23:00

I think I meant lavender rather than rosemary!

Dh has that cough as well.

mrsnoah · 24/01/2007 23:07

boiling pan now.
Have been putting eucalyptus on tissue nightly nearb cot.
am so worried that when I go to sleep it is so deeply that I wont hear him.

He has apnoea alarm still because of dd2's apnoeas , but now am just worrying for sake of it.

sorry mrsnoah , i realise you cant just pop out and get some cough med.
but def put a cup of water or something near bed to humidify the air, from experience the dry air makes me cough more.
and if its too warm that annoys the cough even more so. but the temp. tonight is a bit cooler anyhow.

mrsnoah · 24/01/2007 23:12

Is it when they have a temp that i should be worried?

Have forgotten the world of bronchilitis.

OP posts:
Jimjams2 · 25/01/2007 11:26

How is he today. If the temp goes up defintely go to the docs to rule out a chest infection. Otherwise just keep an eye on breathing. Giving lots to drink can help. DS2 had whooping cough and used to wake up coughing every night for months (October - March!), I used to sit there getting him to drink little sips of water- seemed to help more than anything else, and after about half an hour the spasm would go and he would be able to sleep the rest of the night.

Raise the cot as well. I put a pillow under ds3's cot matress when he has a cough.

saadia · 25/01/2007 12:00

Hope ds is feeling better today and that he managed to get some rest.

Highlander · 25/01/2007 12:38

increases in heart and respiratory rate are also things to be worried about.

mrsnoah · 25/01/2007 23:47

Thank you espec Jimjams and Saadia.

Your tips of steamy pan and wet cloths on radiator did the trick.

He was a lot brighter today and got some colour back. Most importantly, still no temparature.

Put him to bed earlier and again keeps waking up with the hacking cough. More and more drinks.
It must be mucus bothering him down the throat.

I empathise jimjams, DD2 had whooping cough from 3 months what an exhausting time for both of us. They dont call it the cough of a hundred days for nothing. (Gosh now am showing my age).
