"Why do we need to drink" or "How your kidneys work" book req for a 9yo

Does anyone have a nice easy guide to why we need to drink for my 9yo

She is quite bright and used to drink lots but bullying/lack of confidence/new school & bedwetting has mucked it all up

I don't think she is drinking much at all

I also think it is a way of taking control (and not doing what mummy wants)

Tonight she has a headache and might be constipated

Grr frustration

Bump for you

(and also I would be interested as my 7 yr old drinks zilch unless I stand over her and watch her whilst enduring the "oh but why do I have to" etc etc.....!)

My son likes this kind of stuff (so do I) he has the 'horrible science' books - like horrible histories, hang on... this set and on page 109 of 'blood, bones and body bits' by Nick Arnold

"How the kidneys work. The kidneys are like millions of tiny coffee filters linked up to a drain pipe...." then there is stuff about different coloured wee and a worrying bit that says:

"If not enogh water passes through the kidneys the waste forms in agonisingly painful stones." maybe a bit too much just to get her to drink more. Fab book series though.

just reread your post and it says nice easy book, so maybe not this one. will ransack his shelves and let you know if I find anything else.

Katymac · 25/01/2007 20:17

That would be a the right level - I just didn't want a medical text

I am sure she would manage that but I think something a bit more factual (iyswim)

She bedwets and needs to drink more during the day grrrr children

just found another one - less, hmm, well silly I guess.

the first encyclopedia of the human body.

It goes into detail but not too complex. The bit on the kidneys is called 'waste disposal' on page 76

"Millions of chemical processes go on inside your body's cells. These processes release waste into your blood which would poison you if you did not get rid of them. The job of disposing of this waste is carried out by the urinary system....."

Get the idea?

Maybe your library would have a copy?

Have just reread your OP - poor sweetie. Does the school do 'brain gym' - my son is reminded to drink throughout the day.

Hope your dd feels a bit more confident soon.

I do think it's now a control issue (like anorexia)

DS2 suffers from day and nightime wetting (age 6). To encourage him to drink more have a star chart - 3 days of 8 drinks=present. It's working. Trying to expain the science of it didn't work but bribery has!!!

roberta3 · 25/01/2007 22:15

Just copied this from book people. Don't know if 'What Makes You Ill' or 'Why People Eat' may have any of the info you need. We do have the books but they're in DS1's room and he's a light sleeper! Will try to look tomorrow.
