Have been waiting for 2wks for this phone call now I know whats the matter with me - I'm scared. They have diagnosed me with SVT and are in the throws of making me an appointment with a consultant in London.

No idea what SVT is, pinkbubble, but hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along soon.
Will you be seeing the consultant re treatment?

Very fast heartbeat. I have to go to London 1st for clinic app and then they will send me an app to have the extra piece of muscle in my heart blasted- apparently they can do it through a large vein in the groin and feed it all the way up to your heart. What worries me is I will be awake(sedated)just wondered if anyone has had this done asleep. TBH I would much rather be knocked out for it.

Oh blimey - sounds scary! I think I would rather be knocked out too! Is there a particular reason they like to do it under a local?

pinkbubble · 24/01/2007 18:07

I really really dont know, Iknow they like to check the heart beat to see if they can get it to go fast other than that not at all sure

my mother suffers from this but it has been controlled for years by beta blockers, so she has never had to explore the possibility of surgery..however
this might be of some help

pinkbubble · 24/01/2007 19:18

Thanks spacecadet, they have offered me tablets in the mean time, but they are keen to do the operation, apparently I will only be in 1 night and only off work for a couple of days which TBH does sound better than taking tablts for the rest of life- Its just a scary thought its my heart!!!!!

i think the surgery is fairly routine afaik, ans as you say it will mean you hopefully no longer have the attacks and do not have to take tablets, tbh even if my mum was offerec the op she wouldnt have it now as shes nearly 60 and has had this all her life, have you spoken with your cardiologist about what the op entails in more detail?

noddyholder · 25/01/2007 19:35

I have episodes of svt as I have cardiomyopathy I know there is surgery to correct this as it is an electrical disturbance and they can give a tiny shock to kill off the heart branch which is causing it.A friend of mine had this done about 6 yrs ago and so did her 5 yr old and they were both a complete success. Mine is controlled with medication atm

Totally not gonna kill you so please stop worrying!
Every cell of the heart can instigate a heartbeat which usually starts in the sinus node in the upper chambers. SVT is an umbrella term used to describe a heartbeat originating in the upper chambers which is fast. It can be a variety of conditions and the faster it goes can make you feel unwell, breathless, fatigued, dizzy etc. It can be constant or come and go, drugs can control this condition. Your heart wont stop, it can't cause a heart attack and medications can control this condition. You may only ever have one episode.
The only problem is if your heart beats too fast for a long time a clot can form but this is very fast and a very long time so drugs are given it is also very rare. If your heartbeat is 130 or above for over an hour then I would visit a and e for assessment to see if they want to slow it for you. Otherwise don't worry you will be fine. Also avoid triggers that may set it off such as cafine, alcohol, drugs and even really cold weather.
