babies make strange noises .. they grunt, squeal and snort ..

if its worrying you take him to the GP

but from personal experience with a couple of grunters I'd say its normal

still grunting now?

Appear to have any pulling in of skin below the ribs, fast breathing, pale palour, temperature?

If not, don't panic but do ring your HV if concerned. It is normal for babies to make odd noises but if your instincts are telling you something's wrong then get it checked out.

Do you mean grunting as he breathes out? Is it with each breath? Is he breathing fast? Feverish? Sorry - just seen that liquid clocks has mentioned some of these signs. If yes, and is not able to suck/feed, then you should go to A&E. At the very least, phone NHS direct. He is only 5 weeks, better to be cautious.

Could just be normal for him, could be he has a cold which can be no big deal or can lead to difficulties in very small babies (not usually, not trying to scare you, but can - my dd had bronchiolitis at 4 weeks old recently and it started with a stuffy nose), or could be he has a 'floppy larynx' though that usually causes the grunting/squeaky noises earlier on. My dd2 has this - its not a problem 99% of the time, but worth knowing about if its the case.

I agree with the last two posters - if you're concerned, go see the GP, can't hurt!

should I read 'jg' as thanks for rescuing this thread from languishing in unanswered and bump for more opinions then?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 24/01/2007 18:42

ds2 has just has bronchilitis and they specifically asked me if he had been 'grunting'/'barking'.
i would get him checked out.
i dont think iy is major but i personally think a visit to the docs would do no harm, would put your mind at rest if nothing else.

mooshy · 24/01/2007 19:05

"grunting" nasal flaring and chest recession are all possible signs of respiratory distress, so i think you should def. get baby checked over today.
Let us know how things are ?
