he's overweight and the doctor wants to rule out thyroid (not fibroid, like i kept saying last night) problems before sending him to a dietician.

On the pink slip i have to take to the clinic the doctor has ticked the following boxes, just wondered if anyone knew what they was checking for.

U & E
Liver profile
Bone profile
glucose

Any ideas how to get a 7 yo to have a blood test without getting upset??

TIA

U & E is Urea and electrolytes
Liver profile - basically test liver function. These should give an overview of many aspects of his metabolism I expect - as would glucose. Not sure about Bone profile wrt thyrroid problems.

Maybe someone who knows a bit more wil be along soon

Hello wurleywurley. I can sympathise as I had to take my DD (also 7) to hospital on monday for blood tests. I did not tell her until the day itself as she was so worried. I think how you handle it depends on your child. DD sat on my lap to have it done and was not interested in being distracted even though I tried. I took a sucky lolly for her but when it came to it she did not want it. Hopefully you will be able to distract your DS. I did explain to her it would scratch but be over very quickly but I guess at the end of the day there is no real way to sugar coat a blood test. Unfortunately she fainted after but that was because she was so frightened. I did everthing by the book but at the end of the day you need to do what you think will make your DS the least scared, be it the facts, non giving the facts, bribery etc. The very best of luck to you. x x x Oh and a promise of a fiver after from her grandad made it better afterwards.
