Being Referred to a private surgeon - But Who??

My son needs to be referred to a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon because of a problem with his foot, however I recently took out Private Health Insurance and have decided I will use this which I have informed my GP, he said just to let him have the details of which consultant I wish to be referred to and he will do the necersary paperwork--- However my confusion is who?? I expected the health insurance to provide me with a relevant person but all they did was provide me with names and numbers and then said to let them know once I have chosen someone to!

So where do I go now??? - Please help

Dr foster website may help
GP should also be able to recommend someone

Can you now go back to GP with your list and ask which he'd recommend with the most relevant expertise and success rate ?

Janbo25 · 23/01/2007 18:26

dr foster site looks good, my gp was a locum due to real gp being seriously ill and he therefore knows nor is able to recommend a surgeon

Mr S. Nayagam - personal experience of DD injury - we went to Alder Hey Childrens hosptal / Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital, but im not sure where you are as no have no profile.

He is on the website mentioned below.

wotzsaname · 23/01/2007 18:45

we were not private, so im not sure what course of action you would take in that respect.

renaldo · 23/01/2007 18:53

a lot of good surgeons do not do private work, especially kids. Is there a reason you are not using the NHS?

jalopy · 23/01/2007 19:05

You might find that the orthopaedic surgeon at your hospital does private work too. Check to see if they specialise in paediatric surgery. You can ring their private secretary to find out about private consultations.

Once you have decided on a surgeon, you need to check with your health insurers that you can use that particular consultant.

In order for the consultation to take place, you need a referral letter from GP. This can be handed over on the first appt.

BUPA is a good site for information.

Janbo - my dd has had ortho surgery. Her consultant on the NHS was Mr J Dwyer and I would recommend him. I think he does private work.

We've also seen Mr Bradish at Birmingham Childrens but not had him for surgery.

Sorry I forgot to add that I am in Manchester so ideally after a surgeon based in the area somewhere.

Mr Dwyer is in Stoke Janbo - maybe about an hours drive for you. His NHS list is huge so private is probably the only way to go with him. Some good orthos at Alder Hey though I'm sure.

I have selected a surgeon called Dr Nicholas William Kenny nhs at manchester general and also private at BMI The Alexander - but open to change if i hear of any recommendations?

Very good at Alder Hey, i cant speak highly enough of them after experiencing a terrible time at previous hospital, which is thankfully not mentioned here. Wont go into it. The whole Orthopedic team at Alder Hey, surgeons and those on the wards were and I am sure still are, all amazing.

wotzsaname · 23/01/2007 20:32

Janbo25 - hope it all works out well for you.

Janbo25 · 24/01/2007 13:08

Anymore recommendations would be good ideally after a more local surgeon

Janbo - what's he having done?

Have you had a look at the STEPS website? STEPS . Someone there may be able to offer a recommendation.

I think it is only a minor op, I think his tendons in his little toe are to short therefore causing his toe to go under his foot causing him pain when he walks.
