I have always got frequently got colds - every 3 months or so. For the last few months i have been getting them every month without fail. WHen I get a cold I really get bad ones. I havent recovered from my last one before getting my next one.
It's really getting me down now. I hate taking time off work as I am a teacher but keep having no choice.

I know about taking vit C with Zinc and echenasia (sp). Is there anything else I can do?

Why do you need to be off work with a cold?
Do some exercise. That makes a world of difference.

belgo · 23/01/2007 08:35

A healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, plenty of sleep. It might not stop you getting a cold (especially if you are in contact with children at work) but will help you get over colds better.

Cappuccino · 23/01/2007 08:39

stress can easily make you prone to colds so doing some relaxation regularly may help

and moondog sometimes really bad colds need time off work - little sniffles and head colds don't but a real stinker does

belgo · 23/01/2007 08:49

Cappucino is right - relaxation techniques, look into alternative medicine, possible reflexology.

I get awful hummdinger colds - sinus problems, go through 2 boxes of tissues a day etc. I was sent home from work yesterday as I was so awful. I really cannot function at work when I have a cold. That's why it gets me down so much. I would love to have the sort of cold where life carries on.

I have a healthy diet - five portions etc and walk each day with my dogs.

I do have a stressful life - 2 kids, 2 dogs, lots of mud, work 4 days but as a teacher do lots of work at home, dh works nights so housework falls on me, also doing extra qualification thing this year too.

I havent considered reflexology before. WIll look into.

Gosh hercules you could be me at the moment - a cold starts with af every month sinusitis and sinus infections - I use so many tissues it's untrue. It may be stress related for you - I am low atm, I have a lot of things that are stressing me out. I have tried lots of cold remedies - nothing works and I am fairly healthy and active - I have 3 children one of which has special needs so I have to be. When you find something that works let me know - otherwise lets go to a hot sunbaked beach for a week lol.

hercules1 · 23/01/2007 09:32

Yes, I've tried all sorts of cold medication but none of it touches it.

My Dr gave me antibiotics but irt came straight back.

Cappuccino · 23/01/2007 09:54

have you tried that first defence stuff?

it feels like someone has shot you in the nose with mint but it has held colds off for me

feetheart · 23/01/2007 09:54

Apart from the usual advice about rest, less stress etc which isn't always practical I found garlic capulses really helped. The first winter I took them the number of colds I got drastically reduced and very few of them went onto my chest. I now take them throughout the winter. Hofels One-a-Day ones seems to do the job but get the green ones, the yellowy/clear ones repeat on me something rotten

HTH

Ooo feetheart I am going to try them. I fall down on the rest thing as I have 2 children who don;t sleep well at all. My son who is nearly 4 has autism and autistic children have sleep problems - he is up from 4.30am each day and nothing will make him go back off we tried everything he just doesnt need sleep. DD is up at 2am grzzling so I think this is the root of my particular probs.

feetheart · 23/01/2007 10:07

mummy2aaron - poor you on the sleep front, I'll stop complaining about being woken up at 5.45am this morning by DS covered in poo now.
Hope the garlic capulses help give your immune system a kick.

Feetheart, I don;t have the poo, would rather wake up earlier actually lol. Off to get the Garlic now.

mummy2aaron · 24/01/2007 22:23

2 days of the garlic and I am so much better. I am going to keep it in at all times. Thanks for the suggestion.
