Bringing down temp help!

Flamesparrow · 21/01/2007 18:37

I've got a nasty cold, my temp is all over the place and paracetamol hasn't really touched it.

DS (11 months) seems to have the same thing. I gave him medised (note the "s" CSWS ) & nurofen at 4pm, and it hasn't really done anything much to bring his temp down. I'll go and take it to get a proper figure in a min...

Obv he's not due any more paracetamol or nurofen until at 8pm/10pm - how can I help bring it down?? He's stripped to his nappy.

I've got in my head that they started advising against sponging them down but is that me being nuts?

Is it belladonna that is good for temps??

Help!

you can sponge down with "tepid" water and try alternating doses of calpol and nurofen, ie, first dose calpol, then four hours later nurofen, so long as you dont exceed the maximum daily dosage of either.

DelGirl · 21/01/2007 18:40

Hi flame. I was told that you shouldn't sponge them now as it can restrict the blood vessels I think. Do you have a fan that you can put on him? If not, I have one I can lend you. Or, can you open a window for a bit?

Flamesparrow · 21/01/2007 18:41

Oh cr*p.... 39.4. This child's natural temp is 36.1.

Not spoken to you in ages Spacey - I'm sorry things turned a bit cruddy round here and I stopped going on msn.

You can do the nurofen 2 hours after calpol/medised so the doses are staggered.
You shouldn't sponge with cold water as this chills them and makes the body heat up more or something... it's wrong anyway. Tepid/warmish water was fine I thought.
Fan works - hospital did this with DS1.

Flamesparrow · 21/01/2007 18:45

Got a fan upstairs - will go find that, and will give him a lukewarm bath (he likes those anyway )

no worries flame, I havent been on msn much myself!
try not to panic as small children can spike temps then within hours they go back to normal, however if you are worried, I would seek advice from your on call gp, in the meantime stick with the calpol/nurofen and as far as i know, sponging with luke warm water is fine, its cold water thats a no no.

SpaceCadet · 21/01/2007 18:46

oh and make sure he gets plenty of fluid

funnypeculiar · 21/01/2007 18:48

I was told warm/tepid water was fine - worked a treat on ds when he had a scary temparature with ear infection, as SC/Soupy said, think its only cold water thats the problem...

SpaceCadet · 21/01/2007 18:50

p.s sorry to hear things were "cruddy" hope everything is ok now??

Flumpytina · 21/01/2007 18:52

hello flamesparrow, have just checked with dh (a GP) he recommends: calpol & neurofen (you can give them both at the same time, check the dosing guides..paracetamol is usually every 4 hours, up to 4 times in 24hrs, neurofen every six hours up to 3 doses in 24hrs), apologies if you know this already. Keep DS stripped down to nappy, and encourage clear fluids. If he still has a temp tomorrow go see your GP.
Hope that helps. NHS direct is usually pretty good if you want to speak to a human, or an out of hours GP will chat to you on the phone if you want further advice. Hope this helps.

BURNINGTHECANDLE · 21/01/2007 18:53

Tepid spounging is definately recommended, will make ds scream as will feel cold to his very hot body! But keep perserving keep stripped to his nappy and use the fan on a low setting just pat him dry after tepid spounging so as not to warm him back up, if at all concerned call NHS direct for advice but hope that helps and hope you and ds are feeling better soon!

Flamesparrow · 21/01/2007 19:00

Thankyou - off to try all this

notsogummyanymore · 22/01/2007 13:37

hope you're both better soon, we had a scarey week too so can hugely sympathise!

BURNINGTHECANDLE · 22/01/2007 21:53

How's it going are you both any better? xx

Flamesparrow · 23/01/2007 13:17

Hiya, his temp is down a lot (still not normal, but the scarey spiking at the being constantly high is improving).

Crying most of the time, but yesterday he was moaning, so again - improvement!!!

Thankyou for asking.
