Urgent help needed - do I take DS to A&E or not?

Ds has had very watery stools since last night - pale yellow in colour, last one slightly greenish. He is usually a good eater and took 8 oz of formula this am. Since then, he had 1.5 oz of formula at lunch with a little water and 2 oz of formula at 18:00. He has had lots more watery stools - probably about 8 or so today - but the front of his nappies are dry.

I spoke to NHS Direct who got a doctor to call me. Before the doctor rang, ds fell asleep at around 18:15. The doctor has suggested taking him to A&E, but he is still asleep and I don't know whether it is better to just leave him to sleep or wake him up and head for the hospital.

Am tending towards waking him up to take him to A&E, but I am scared that they will insist on giving him fluids intravenously which is obviously going to be a pretty horrid experience...

Any thoughts on whether I should take him or leave him to sleep?

Take him to A&E.

Quootiepie · 20/01/2007 19:46

If the doctor advised A & E... i'd go to A & E {{hugs}} xXx

McDreamy · 20/01/2007 19:46

If you've been advised to go I would go - you'll only end up going later and be there with all the drunks etc! Hope things improve soon

Carmenere · 20/01/2007 19:47

Why would you ignore the advice of the doctor?

tribpot · 20/01/2007 19:47

How old is ds? If a newborn I would definitely say go. If relatively old, I would say hang on til tomorrow unless he gets worse in the night.

lulumama · 20/01/2007 19:48

go to A&E , he will only get more dehydrated....you should follow their advice, even if you have to wake him
poor little thing

Mumpbump · 20/01/2007 19:48

He's 11.5 mo... Normally very fit and healthy. I just don't want him to have tubes stuck in him...

I agree with Carmenere

hippmummy · 20/01/2007 19:48

I would - no urine means he is dehydrated.

If they do give him IV fluids it will be cos he needs it.

Poor lamb - hope he's ok [sad}

StrawberrySnowflakes · 20/01/2007 19:48

i know what your saying as my dd was poorly recently and i panicked on here, given lots of good advice, couldnt get app at prime care till 11.40 and as shed finally fallen asleep and temp lowered i left her sleep..had to take her to our gp the following day.she had scarlettina and tonsiltitus..believe me..go to A&E..good luck

McDreamy · 20/01/2007 19:48

But Mumpbump if that's what he needs - but it might not come to that

MerlinsBeard · 20/01/2007 19:49

I would A&E. how old is he?

Mumpbump · 20/01/2007 19:49

Right - I'm off. Thanks for confirming my suspicion. I shall just have to deal with whatever happens... I'll post here later if it all comes to nothing - I do hope so!!!

Just got back from A&E - there are some advantages to living 10 minutes away from the hospital!! There was hardly anyone else there so we were seen quite quickly and the doc seemed to think he was basically okay. She says it's viral and to see how he goes, but if he still isn't taking any fluids by late morning or is very irritable/lethargic, to take him back tomorrow. Main thing is both he and I can sleep in peace tonight!!

Just so relieved he doesn't need to have lots of things stuck in him. It's just knowing that you wouldn't be able to explain why he was going through the pain... Thanks, everyone, for your advice - definitely better safe than sorry...

Glad he is ok

Miaou · 20/01/2007 21:28

oh that sounds positive mumpbump - but do keep an eye on his fluid input/output in case he does suffer from dehydration

McDreamy · 21/01/2007 07:53

How are things this morning mumpbump?

helenhn · 21/01/2007 10:02

My DD (4 months) had diarriah, vomiting, off her milk, and dry nappies. We took her to A&E as she wasn't getting any better after 36 hours. The doctors told us that she was getting dehydrated and they kept us in overnight and gave her dioralyte which is a powder mixed in cool boiled water which you give in her bottle. This rehydrated her. We were told to give her 1 oz of milk every half hour and if she threw this back up to put her back on dioralyte. After a few days of doing this she was fine and is now drinking her milk and making up for lost time. You can get dioralyte from the chemist - it comes in sachets of 20 - we had the natural flavour.

Given the choice if iv or ng, I'd take - for myself or DD - iv any day!
