DD has difficulty breathing - any advice?

DD (10) returned from a friend's house 1hr ago sobbing and said her throat was burning all the way down. After questioning her, it doesn't seem that she's eaten anything unusual, but I thought maybe it was some sort of allergy. Gave her some antihistamine and nurofen and after an hour of her saying she can't breathe or swallow, I've managed to calm her down to the point where she seems to have dozed off (hands clutching throat).

If it is an allergy to something she's eaten, will it just fade away? What else could it be? She did say her neck was hurting at school this afternoon.

Call nhs direct

morningpaper · 19/01/2007 20:35

I would take her to the oncall doctor and get her properly examined and proper oxygen levels checked

I'd speak to your out of hours GP or go to A&E. Also could you ring the friend's family to see if you can get any ideas on what may have happened?

Tiggiwinkle · 19/01/2007 20:39

I would definitely get medical advice.

Thanks for responding so quickly all of you! Have just phoned the out-of-hours docs and someone is going to call me back.
The family she was with don't know what set it off either.

Hope she is better today. xxx

Thunderpants · 20/01/2007 17:03

how is your DD today pianist?

pianist · 20/01/2007 17:14

Thanks for the concern. She's much better today. Doctor thought probably an allergy but we can't pinpoint what! Still a bit pale and with a temperature and sore throat, but I'm not worried about it being life-threatening now!

I get in such a panic when I'm on my own with them and they're ill at night...

It's hardly surprising, it must have been terrifying for you. Hope she continues to improve.

Thunderpants · 20/01/2007 21:44

Good to hear. I'm often on my own with my two and as you say it can be very scary. Nice to know there's a whole load of mners out there to offer support though!

pianist - hope all is OK. Horrible when they are ill like that. Glad it was only an allergy - my dd has just had a chest infection. Heaving chest - the works and I had to give her loads of Ventolin every 2 hours all night last Wed. Has had to have antibiotics and short course of steroids. You have to stay calm at the time and then you feel terrible afterwards - fear, I guess. Anyone else with a child with asthma ? Seems to have got worse this winter and I can't help worrying.
