How Can I Stop DS Getting Nappy Rash?

He's started to get nappy rash alot, and it will go somewhat after metanium (sp?) and nappy off time, but it keeps coming back. I change his nappy often as I can't tell when he wees, and literally as soon as he poos (you can hear him ) but it isn't really helping... He never had it before he went on formula, but also he got stuck into solids about the same time... Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks xXx

I don't know how old your little one is, but providing there isn't a family history of nut allergies, you could try him on a bit of smooth peanut butter on bread - foods that are rich in zinc (i.e peanuts) can clear nappy rash up very quickly. The problem is more often than not internal, rather than a problem of excess moisture in the nappy. Also, do you give him orange juice at all? My son is 2.2 now, but still gets raging nappy rash the moment I give him orange juice. Hope this helps, and good luck.

9 1/2 months. I only give milk and water to drink, no allergies but I think nuts are a no no under a year?

You're right! Nuts are a no no under a year, or so I've been led to believe, but I've often wondered whether they mean whole nuts because of the choking hazard? Still, better safe than sorry, but when he's a year+, I'd give it a try.

I use a very thick zinc cream (not just a cream that contains a bit of zinc as a component, but an actual 'zinc cream'), and it works wonders even on the worst of nappy rashes. This is routinely used and recommended in Finland. I am sure they must have a similar product here. Ask at your pharmacy.

One cream that contains peanut oil is fullers earth cream (that was actually suggested to me by an HV! and it didn't help anyway). Metanium is the only thing that seems to work.

we use Bepanthen after every nappy change and it prevents any nappy rash brilliantly. We started using it on ds after an awful bout of nappy rash which this cleared up almost in hours! - you can buy massive tubes of it in Boots but it isn't cheap

sunita123 · 19/01/2007 19:46

I've used Bepanthen before - Brill!
I also use Sudocream. But the main thing is which ever cream you use, make sure you put it on EVERY time you do a nappy change.

i dont know if it's been mentioned- but maybe changing nappy brands or wipe brands may help...

a cream thats great (we've always found!) for nappy rash is drampoline. most chemists sell it. its smooth to go on and you dont need to rub it to get it off (like other creams). and it doesnt interfere with the nappy working properly...

i hope it clears up for him soon....

(i used to put ds when he would get a bad rash in warm bath with bicarbonate of soda in the water.. and also most baby wipes have alcohol in them, which can irritate too!)
