HI, My DS is 3 in April this year and following examintation and hearing test surgeon says he needs his adanoids removing and grommits put in. Surgeon has said he's happy to do the op, but the final say is down to me as hes still only young and they prefer to do it nearer 4.
Has anyone had any experience on this, have your toddlers had this op, what age and what to expect? Also, heard rumours they cant swim afterwards for a certain amount of time and how long would the recouperation be?
Thanks for any help at all!

dd had grommets at 15 months. Her language development had stalled because of glue ear. Done as day case, had operation at 2pm. She was fractious when she woke up until she was able to eat something. I took her home at 5pm, when dh got home at six she was her usual self. Her vocabulary tripled in a few days. She still got ear infections but less painful as they drained immediately. Still took her swimming with ear plugs. Very glad we had it done. I was influenced by a friend who's a speech therapist. She emphasised critical periods in the development of speech and comprehension and urged us not to put it off.

foxy we paid $20 for ours.

Dd1 stayed in overnight - she was dancing on her bed when the doc came to check her out the afternoon post surgery - so she really did bounce back.

Dh stayed with her - dd1 tiny and still breastfeeding. He said the worse one in the ward was a teenager - who kept moaning about how sore his throat was and whose mother demanded the consultant be called in the middle of the night to come and see him. All the young ones who were in did really well.

My ds had grommets at 9 months due to glue ear and the fact that he had stopped speaking. They worked wonders. I then took him to a cranial osteopath and although he had been booked for adenoids at three it wasnt needed after 6 months of treatment.

Eids, when DS was in the hospital there was an older boy of about 9. He howled continuously and it was really distressing to listen to. I agree that the younger ones cope better.
