DS is 5 weeks old and was diagnosed with a floppy larynx at 1 week.

Every cough is a bark and when he's excited or fretful or feeding his breathing sounds like Darth Vader.

Friends and family find it worrying, but DH and I are learning to live with it. And when he sleep or is completely relxed there's no noise at all so it's not constant.

I asked my HV how long until he grows ot of it (or in to it) as the paediatrician advised he would. But all she could say was that she has known a lot of cases all of which varied, but only one which was much more severe than DS where an operation was required.

So I wonderd if anyone could help by sharing thier experience.

Thanks

If a child is going to grow out of it, the should do by a year

DS 16months had this and it was gone by 8 months. It was first diagnosed at birth. He saw the consultant at the hospital at 6weeks then again at 6 months and as it had reduced alot we were told he could be signed off. Then one day at around 8 months we noticed that it had gone!! It was a bit scary but it does just dissapear so dont worry too much.

Hi had 2 reply as my DS had the same thing that was diagnosed also at 1 week.
Had the same thing with family and friends and felt like our DS was strange!!
When out with him plenty iof people would tell me that I needed to wind him or that he was very chesty! This caused alot of tension on our part! (Although we understood people meant well)
We saw plenty of doctors who told us a range of things, mainly that it would go anywhere from 3 months to a year. This seemed really scary to us and we tried everything to help him but found that he dealt with it brilliantly!
DS is now 4 1/2 months and the squeak has gone although occasionally he might pass a squeak if worked up. It now doesn't pass our minds if he squeaks and sometimes we miss the noise he makes!! lol!
Hope this helps as I know how you feel.

xx

DS was hospitalised for it when he was 1 month old and refered to paediatric ENT afterthat, ENT recommended surgery but... by the time he got a date for it DS had almost outgrown it (or at least was not so noisy as for most people to notice). He had the surgery anyway but as I said we barely heard him anymore by the he was 5m.

A good friend of mine's dd3 had this - very noisy. Was a matter of months, not as long as a year but it was all absolutely fine and no need at all for her to worry.
