Teething - when does it start? Which teeth come first?

Hi
DD is 3 months but wondering if maybe she's teething. I've read some teething posts and it's possible she is. I've felt her top and bottom gums at the front and there's nothing but DH says he can feel something coming to the side of where the top front teeth will be.....So....Please can you tell me when your DC started teething and which teeth/what tooth came first?
PMSL. If those teeth are coming through first she's going to look like a little vampire baby!

With both DS and DD they teethed on and off for a few months before any teeth came. I think their first teeth came at about 7 months.

For both of them it was their bottom middle teeth that came first, but for some babies it is other teeth that are first.

Deciduous teeth generally start to appear at around 6 months. But symptoms can start way before & the whole precess can be quite drawn out (sorry).

Dates for each tooth

DD showed all the so called signs of teething from 3 or 4 months. Her first tooth arrived at 13 months, and it was the wrong one - they came all in wrong order, with the bottom two middle teeth being two of the last to arrive!

My lo has definately been teething since 3 months (she's now a very grown up 4!) I can feel the teeth under the gums and can actually see a couple. Red cheeks, unexplicable fretting etc etc. However, this being my first I don't know if that's the norm or not. My brother in law cut two teeth at three months apparently so it's possible despite the fact that my health visitor dismissed the idea as she was 'too young'!

chocolatebirdy · 17/01/2007 12:22

DD got her first two teeth at 4mths, they were her bottom front and she always got 2 at a time! DS on the other hand didnt get his first until 13months and it was his lateral incisor at the top so he did indeed look like a little vamp!!

Mine started teething at 3mths, and at almost 7ths now has 2 front bottom teeth right through, with 2 bottom molars fighting to get out aswell. It's usually the bottom front ones first, but not always. Excessive gnawing and drooling are the usual sign, can also have flushed cheeks, some babies get earache, nappy rash etc around this time, but there's debate as to whether that's due to the teeth.

my ds got his first 2 at 20 weeks. some come early!

tinytotmummy · 17/01/2007 12:29

My ds didn't have any teeth until he was about 12 months, but had all teething signs from about three - he dribbled constantly for two years!!

DD had first tooth at about 6 months, but had no signs whatsoever. Teething didn't bother her at all.

Thanks for the replies.
I've read that sudden crying/fussing at the bottle/breast may be an indicator. Did this happen to anyone else? Also, if she is, does it hurt? I've just read on the bonjela packaging that she can't use it until she's 4 months - although maybe it's safer than rubbing her gums with whiskey (mum's advice)?

bottom 2
any time afer 4 months

DetentionGrrrl · 17/01/2007 12:44

i'd avoid the whisky!

Try Ashton and Parsons powders (Boots), which are humorously referred to as 'baby coke' in our house.

Or i'm pretty sure that Dentinox gel is ok from birth.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 17/01/2007 12:49

Ds didn't get his first tooth until around 8 months. They were very slow making an appearance! His second tooth around 10months, but around 12-13 months they all seemed to come at once.

I must be one of the lucky ones, I do not recall a single moment when he had problems with 'teething'. He never woke in the night or cried more etc. I bought him several teethers to chew which he used a lot, one I can recommend is by 'bonjela' it is tooth shaped and can be chilled in the fridge. He would chew this every day.

Detentiongrrrl.
Very far away from nearest Boots - another continent! Do they come in light packaging, as I can always get my mum to post them?

DetentionGrrrl · 17/01/2007 12:52

definately- it's a little light box with wraps of powder in them. My DS loves them so much he stops what he's doing and opens his mouth ready!

Seoulmum · 17/01/2007 12:57

I'm glad it tastes ok. I tried to give her Calpol once and she was having none of it. Need to ask my mum to post it over.
Thanks.

Nice to read the replies and know that if DD is teething then it's not unusual. Some kids get teeth early, some late. As a first time mum it's easy to get freaked out when LO's aren't progressing as "normal".
