Basal cell carcinoma

Hi all,
Ive had a recurring lump on my finger at the joint below the nail. GP thought it was a wart and froze it off. Unfortunately it recurred. Just back from another GP who says it is a bcc and needs referral to dermatologist. I'm a bit anxious now (though GP said not to worry) as I read that more serious cancers can mimic this?! Arggh. Anyone had experience of this who can perhaps reassure me?

Hi OP, GP here. BCCs are very treatable and don't metastasise, so if it is that then there's no need to worry. The other type of non-melanoma skin cancer, SCC, is a little more serious but again is generally very treatable once it gets seen by a specialist.

What did you read that got you worrying?

BCCs are incredibly common, and look very different to melanomas. I'm sure you'll see the dermatologist soon, and they'll decide what it is for sure

I've had a couple on the back of each hand, and some dodgy areas on my face. They sometimes come back after treatment but they really don't seem to be viewed as dangerous.

Thanks for the responses. I read something on another MN thread (a zombie one) saying that bcc sometimes mimic more serious ca. I guess this probably meant the scc kind. I guess it was a wee shock to hear the c word when I thought it was a stubborn wart that needed another freezing! It did appear rapidly over a few weeks. My mum had a bcc on her forehead a few months back. I always assumed they affected slightly older people. I guess at 42 I've become the slightly older person myself!
