Blood in DD's poo

DD is 18 weeks and on three or four seperate occasions (i.e. days if not weeks apart) she's had small traces of mucusy blood in her poo.

Took her to the Dr. after the first one and was told she was probably constipated. I thought this was unlikely as she is totally BF and has lots of very explosive poos. Anyway, they couldn't find anything wrong.

Last week she had what looked like a little clot (browny pinkish) a bit of blood and what looked like some cotton wool or tissue (of the human variety!). I thought it was probably threadworm but DH isn't convinced as it was so big. Must have been 2.5cm long and thick as little finger(when it all merged together. It did look like fine threads at first).

Anyway, today she's had tiny traces of mucusy blood again. She is absolutely fine in herself. doesn't sleep a lot, but happy. Over Christmas she didn't put on a lot of weight but is regaining again.

Sorry this is so long and rambling but what I want to know is. a) is this mucusy blood something to worry about and b) Does the other thing sound like threadworm.
Thanks

My ds started having blood and mucous in his poo when he was about 4 months old (but was otherwise fine). We took him to GP & A&E several times over the next few months, but they did not know what it was. In the end, we were referred to a paediatric gastroenterologist who immediately diagnosed it as a cow's milk allergy. Ds was fully breastfed when it started, so I eliminated all dairy products from my diet and his. It solved the problem. I?d push for a referral to a gastroenterologist. HTH

Have followed you over from the sleep thread gingerninja... Worth getting her and her nappies looked at I think. Though obviously it might be nothing.

I look at ds's poo sometimes (also fully bf) and wonder where the hell those stringy bits come from , though haven't really had them all clumped together like your dd's. He also had blood in his poo a couple of times (also seemed perfectly happy) but it was more like coffee grounds so had been digested rather than come from lower down IYSWIM - doc rushed us to the hospital (he had also vomited some bright red blood) only for us to be told it was almost certainly all blood from my cracked nipple . I understand the colour of it is one way you can tell where it's coming from, though it were me I'd rather confirm it with a doc.

Thanks for the advice. Interesting Joppe as she has bad eczema and I've been wondering about the link to dairy and have started to exclude it from my diet for that reason so cross fingers it was that and nothing more sinister.

i would ask for a referral pronto...blood in poo and mucous needs to be investigated and diagnosed , as Joppe has suggested .....there should not be blood or mucous in healthy poo......so get it checked..will probably be nothing sinister, but needs looking at

Thanks everyone. I took DD to the Dr. this evening and they're going to refer her to the Peadiatrics but don't think there is anything too wrong.

I mentioned the allergy possibilitiy Joppe and Dr. said they'd never heard of blood in poo from dairy allergy but you and others have suggested it so I'm going to pursue it. I'm also going to post this message on the allergy board to see if I get any other suggestions.

Thanks again

We took ds at least 4 times to A&E, twice to the GP, and a paediatrician we were referred to. None of them mentioned the possibility of a cow's milk allergy. Fortunately the last time we took him to A&E and the doctor there made sure we got a referral to a paediatric gastroenterologist, who diagnosed the allergy. I guess it not widely known about or recognised. It is not a typical allergic reaction, in that it does not involve the production of antibodies. DS had/has a deficiency in IgA though, which they found when they were running tests to find out what was going on, and apparently that is consistent with food allergies. Ds later also developed an egg allergy (led to diarrhoea and weight loss). So I guess what I'm saying is that doctors don't necessarily know about this (although, of course, your dd might not have it). You probably know that it is quite difficult to eliminate dairy products completely from your diet, as it is hidden in lots of products (you'd need to look for things like whey, casein, etc). I was put in touch with a dietician, when told to eliminate dairy products, which was very helpful. You would have to think about calcium intake, etc. quite carefully.

My dd (now 22 weeks) has had this too (the blood and mucus). It seems to have stopped now. I found this page useful: "what causes blood in baby's stool"
We never got to the bottom of what caused it though. Just as I was getting to the point where I might have pushed for a referral it stopped happening. It was always v tiny amounts and I was reassured by chatting to my friend who's a paedeatrician that as long as she was generally well and gaining weight is was unlikely to be anything serious. When I took herto the GP about it they didn't take it v seriously! I was a bit surprised too that they seemed to think it could be constipation in an exclusively bf baby!
Anyway I decided not to try eliminating dairy as it is a very restrictive diet for me (i'm mostly veggie)and dd wasn't distreesed at all.
