and hedrin doesn't sodding well work and is £12 a pop!
I've got v thick hair and have been plagued for nearly a year by the little critters, however much I comb/use hedrin/oil etc etc. I just can't get rid of all the tiny eggs! Manage it on the kids as I can at least see what I@m looking for. DH says he hasn't got the patience to comb my hair for me
any techniques I've missed out on? TIA!

I've heard one about conditioning then clingfilming your head (leave your face out ) then hairdrying it, to suffocate/boil them. Sounds gross, don't know if it works, never tried it and probably wouldn't on a child, but there might be no harm in trying it on yourself?

RanToTheHills · 16/01/2007 09:38

god, radical and not one to do with the neighbours round! Have done clingfilm but not wiht the hairdryer so in desperatiom might try it!

Delacet has worked for a couple of my friends. If you use it though it is important to completely saturate the hair, if there are any dry bits it won't work properly.

kslatts · 16/01/2007 09:41

Do you dye your hair. I had them last year but the dye I put on killed them.

Any chance you could ask a friend to comb you, and you would do her? I managed to get rid of mine with a combination of hedrin, 2 days later the babyoil and clingfilm, then hedrin again a week later. DH isn't very thorough at combing for me, and it is impossible to do it so you can see on yourself.

RanToTheHills · 16/01/2007 09:42

oh right, thanks sounds like it works along the same lines as hedrin then.

But if the eggs are stil there that won't help really will it.

I know it's a pain but try doing the washing/combing/conditioning thing every day for a week to see if you can break the cycle. Ie. the eggs hatch but your remove the lice before they actually lay any eggs themselves.

I found the combs that come with the BugBuster kit were the best. Just google Bugbuster and you can order on line I think.

RanToTheHills · 16/01/2007 09:44

that's a thought but would be too embarrassed i think! Don't know anyone well enough to ask round here and getting a bit sensitive as parents are looking round for someone to blame for spreading it round the class.

DS has thick hair and used to get them endlessly, so I started buying tee tree oil, its costly at around £5 for 30ml, but it last ages, I just put 6-8 drops in a litre spray bottle, fil with water, and spray his hair and scalp every morning, he has not had them for 12 months now.

whatkatydidntdo · 16/01/2007 09:52

I use the teatree conditioners and have a nitty gritty comb and that really seems to work.

Oati · 16/01/2007 09:54

at times like this, I am thankful for my sparse straight hair

(about the only time though)

melsy · 16/01/2007 09:57

Sounds like your lice are getting used to the headrin. I used Derbac M on my dd1 last yr . I coudlnt as was pg, so I combed for 4weeks drove me potty , but I learnt how to do it in the shower and after with TONS of cheap conditioner. Dd1's went within a couple of days of using the derbac M. I think once they get used to a product it will not work anymore.

100PerCentCod · 16/01/2007 09:58

you arent combing prepolery

theflumpsmum · 16/01/2007 09:58

We've had the same problem here, still not completely nit free but winning the war I think .
I've tried everything and the only thing that's working is using the Nitty Gritty comb.I bought one over Xmas and comb through their hair everyday, wet or dry, with it.It's got alot of the eggs out as well and all we have now is tiny little nits...I'm just hoping that if I persevere with it eventually I'll get all the eggs out and that the little nits left are too little to lay eggs, and I'll get them too.

It is a complete pain in the arse to do everyday but it's the only thing that's working for us

DrumMum · 16/01/2007 10:02

You have my sympathy...DD had headlice for months, I can honestly say that they took over my Life! someone in her class had them and she kept catching them daily! The school could do nothing!
In the end I was doing everyones hair every night with a good nit comb and conditioner.. just when we thought alalulja... they've gone.. she would come back with huge ones that couldn't have just hatched!
Anyway, we got rid of them over xmas, but I still check her hair every night.
Have you got any straighteners.. I'm sure this helped to kill the eggs... get your self a good nit comb and I used to condition my hair and comb it upsidedown over the bath ...
Good luck

littlemissbossy · 16/01/2007 10:05

I'd do the conditioner/combing method every night for TWO weeks - pain I know, but you've got to keep trying. You might also suggest to your DH that he do his hair as well.

zephyrcat · 16/01/2007 10:08

I need help too! I've bought 2 bottles of hedrin in the last 2 weeks for me and dd and it diesn't seem to be working.

I'm to the point of getting dd's hair cut It is waistlegnth and I can't face (nor can she!) hours of wetcombing every single day.

I feel like a total scuzzbucket itching everywhere and want them GONE!!!
