*DD woke up thirsty last night
*She has been peeing loads recently, even my Nan noticed
*Yesterday in nursery she was crying and shaking but as soon as they fed her she was OK.

Her dad is diabetic and the alarm bells are ringing, she is only 2

Someone please tell me these are all just coincidences

I'm in work, have a meeting in half hour about flexible working times and my head is fucked

Don't know WB I'm afraid. Suspect the only way you will know is to have her checked out.

Sorry - I know you have been through the mill with her recently.

Well, she might have a virus, which might cause all those things, but book her in for a blood test anyway or it'll drive you mad. Phone your GP and get an emergeny appt - they'll probably need to refer her to a paediatrician to take the bloods but hopefully that won't take too long.

WelshBoris · 16/01/2007 08:42

Thanks, as soon as I'm out of this stupid meeting I'm ringing the doctors

If she does have it, I'm going to smash her fathers face in

a gp can do a simple urine test at the surgery initially wb, no need for blood tests. so you will find out straightaway. fingers crossed it isn't diabetes.

Cadmum · 16/01/2007 08:44

Oh WB... I do hope that you are reading too much into this but it would only be prudent to suggest that you run her in to see the GP...

I worried about our dd1 because she is a mess unless she eats small amounts regularly and, unlike her brothers, she always needs the loo... I did take her to the gp and there was no sugar in her wee so that made me sleep more easily.

Seem to remember from a friend whose daughter was recently diagnosed that weight loss is also another key symptom - as the body is using up its own stores as it can't access the sugars in food - something along those lines. Any signs? Yo're doing the right thing, there's no harm in checking her out, and if she's got it then at least you can begin to manage it.

Good luck.

winterpimms · 16/01/2007 09:50

Could you take a urine sample with you, so they could test straight away? Hopefully this would put your mind at restxx

DimpledThighs · 16/01/2007 10:13

good luck with everything.

It could be that but it could be something else (UTI) and the food calmed her down.

I know it is easier said than done but don't worry until you know. There are other explanations.

Let us know.

Chocol8 · 16/01/2007 17:46

Just a thought, but i went for a diabetes test at a Lloyds Pharmacy, it was done there and then with no fuss. Don't know if they take little people though.

Hope it's good news WelshBoris x

Piffle · 16/01/2007 17:47

I can post a load of dipstick sugar in urine test sticks WB if you wanted?

Kittypickle · 16/01/2007 18:07

I think you are doing the right thing ringing your GP just to be on the safe side, I have had to do with a couple of times with my DD, DH is diabetic.

But wouldn't the food perking her up show she in fact had low blood sugar ? If she is undiagnosed with diabetes her blood sugar would be high and I wouldn't have thought that you would get the same effect. Diabetics do get low blood sugar but as a result of the insulin they take pushing their levels too low.

I was worried a little bit about DS after a virus recently, DH wasn't as he said that he would be drinking loads and loads and we would really notice. Will keep my fingers crossed that your DD is fine.

Flossam · 16/01/2007 18:11

I'm a little worried about DS with this too actually. He normally drinks much less than he is atm. He's off his food a bit too though so could be a virus. I plan to try and get a wee sample... and see what shows up. Hes much more tired than usual too.

WelshBoris · 18/01/2007 08:50

I'm less worried today.

I think because her dad has it the alarm bells started ringing, where if he didnt then it probably wouldnt occur to me.

Thanks for your replies and for the offer Piffle but I think I'm going to see how she is this weekend then decide.

I think the big symptom to look for is excessive tiredness, and wacky behaviour on having sugar. One of spidermama's dses was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

(What sort of diabetes does her dad have?)

Bozza · 18/01/2007 08:59

wb I think that her Dad having diabetes is bound to make you more anxious if she starts to display one or two potential symptoms. Like others say she could have a virus. I sometimes get a bit shaky without food which I think is related to low blood pressure in my case, was worse when I was pregnant. Hope it is nothing.

DimpledThighs · 18/01/2007 09:38

oh welshboris, was glad to read your second post. I completely undersrtand where you are coming from, anxiety regarding your children being ill is awful and you can get to the point where you don't know if things are in perspective or not.

Best wishes.

Cappuccino · 18/01/2007 09:44

I think putting your mind at rest is a good thing

it's only natural to want to have her tested if her dad is diabetic

they won't think you're a madwoman if you turn up at the surgery

it may be though - dunno if you have checked this - that if they did loads of tests when she was in hospital they may have checked her for this as a matter of routine? They may have already ruled this out; it's worth checking

I had blood tests a while ago at the GP and he was amazed at the amount of stuff they tested for that he hadn't even asked for, just to rule things out
