HI
Myself and my DD met up with a work colleague and her 2 boys on Friday and she texted me yesterday to say that they both have chickenpox spots. W

Does anyone know the signs to look out for (apart from the spots!!) to know if my dd has caught it and how long does it last. We're due to fly to the Canaries on 30 Jan so hoping she hasnt got it.

Mmm she may6 well do. Ds2 had them at that ge.

Look out for a snotty cold, other than that it will be spots!

When my ds got it it took about 2 days of general grumbling and clinginess before the actual spots came out, and then about another 5 days before he was better. If she has got it and the spots come out soon you may still be ok for your holiday.

I have no idea how long it can be between exposure to it and actually getting the spots though.

Ds (17m) had them between Christmas and new year. For a couple of days before the spots came out he was off his food and a bit grumpy - but once the spots started to appear he was fine. Incubation period is 10-14 days so be prepared for the spots to appear just around the time you are going!

At that age she will probably suffer much less than she would if she was older. My dds developed chicken pox as we were on holiday travelling (they were 2 and 3 at the time), and other than finding it difficult to settle down to sleep for a couple of nights, it didn't affect our holiday at all. HTH.

DS had chickenpox at 22mths and had a few days of being a bit off colour, had a fair few spots(came out within 2 days) but was completely OK within 8days...get the camomile lotion and calpol at the ready...she should be OK for your trip. I have been told that the earlier they get Chickenpox the better it is.

My daughter had chicken pox and as I hadn't had them before I was amazed not to catch them from her (as I nursed her continuously through the illness)..until almost a month AFTER her spots died down. I started to erupt with them and was quite poorly (being an adult). I think ithe incubation period and the arrival of visible spots can be variable.

About three days before my spots came out and not knowing I had it, I had been cuddling my friends baby and I was then worried that she might have got it, however she was fine, so I don't think you can tell until the spots appear.

my older dd (4) had chickenpox and her little sister (2) didnt catch it.

and they share baths and everything!

the signs i saw were general poorly feeling 2 days before then teeny tiny spots day 1 then all of a sudden the blisters. felt unwell for 3 days then totally fine. was allowed back to school after a week, although she still had spots (but they were dried up)

if your dd does get spots make sure you ahve a large supply o f calamine lotion, and, if shes allowed it (being so young) Piriton, which IMO was a lifesaver for dd here

good luck and i hope you get on holiday!

Twiglett · 15/01/2007 09:50

probably not .. but if I were you I'd hope she did as its milder the younger they catch it

nailpolish · 15/01/2007 09:52

yes i agree with that too twiglett. i was actually disappointed dd2 didnt get it, i rubbed them together in the bath, let them lick the same spoons, everything..
