it might be gastritis an inflamation of the stomach,i used to get it in my wild days and drinking lots of cold milk used to ease the pain, you should have it checked though
hope you're better soon

sorry about that,go to the doctors they will not think you have a drinking problem it does happen even if you only drink once in a blue moon,my doctor gave me this white powder to mix with water it tastes like chalk but it works

noddy5 · 30/05/2004 12:00

if your pancreas gets inflamed from alcohol it is apparently excruciating or like the others have said you may have irritated your stomach lining.Maybe stop drinking for a while and see?

Don't want to worry you in any way, but is the pain also radiating to your back and up towards your shoulders? Do you find that you get similar pain if you eat very fatty foods?

This happened to dh (who hardly ever drank) and this was pancreatitis. If this sounds like it is the case SEE THE DOC asap. Pancreatitis can be a real prblem. dh is now thankfully fine, but has been teetotal for 7 years

whymummy · 30/05/2004 16:41

try not to eat anything strong,it might be better to have some natural yogurt, you said the milk made it worse but it does help neutralize the acid in your stomach, try just drinking it slowly and often,if you're going to take pain killers crush them first and mix with water, that's what i was told to do by my doctor when i had gastritis,i hope this helps till you get to see a doctor

I would cancel the shivery feeling could be pancreatitis and if it flares up you will feel rough. Can't you see a doctor earlier?

hmb · 30/05/2004 18:05

Found this on the symptoms of Pancreatitis

Acute pancreatitis usually begins with pain in the upper abdomen that may last for a few days. The pain may be severe and may become constantjust in the abdomenor it may reach to the back and other areas. It may be sudden and intense or begin as a mild pain that gets worse when food is eaten. Someone with acute pancreatitis often looks and feels very sick. Other symptoms may include:

swollen and tender abdomen
nausea
vomiting
fever
rapid pulse

When it was dh, he went from 100% normal to writhing on the floor in agony in 15 minutes. If your symptoms fit the description, please see the doc. It could just be gastritis, but either way you need to get it sorted. And you don't have to be an alcholic to get pancreatitis, dh hardly ever drank, as the doc explained it to us some people respond to very low levels of alcohol in this way.

hmb the same happened to dh although he did drink at weekends but it was so bad he spent 3 months in hospital(nil by mouth)as he ended up with two cysts one the size of an orange and the other like a football,i don't want to scare you mth but if you're getting worse or the pain is just as bad go to the hospital just to be safe

hmb · 30/05/2004 18:18

It is scary isn't it Whymummy? Thankfully dh was out after 2 weeks, but it was grim, and he was lest with chronic pancreatitus. Thankfully he has been symptom free for 7 years possibly thanks to being teetotal and being on a low fat diet for all that time.

I would echo what whymummy has said. It may be nothing, but it could be serious and it isn't one to play around with. And please don't fib about your alcohol intake as that can be important.

Please take the greatest care of yourself.

whymummy · 30/05/2004 18:26

glad your dh is ok hmb, unfortunetly mine still has a few cans every now and again and sometimes he's fine and sometimes he gets a warning wich thankfully never ends in him going back to hospital,he has acute pancreatitis so it just flares up once in a while,he doesn't learn though

mth i agree with hmb don't lie about how much you drank it might safe you from being at the hospital for ages if they know the cause of the pain
hope you're ok

hmb · 30/05/2004 18:31

Dh said it was easy to give up the juice as the althernative could be writhing in agony! If he gets another attack he would lose his flying licence so he has lots of incentives to stay off booze No booze and low fat food, it makes us a wow at dinner parties I still drink tho!

whymummy · 30/05/2004 18:35

me too in one way is good as i know he'll probably be down the pub playing pool with his mates every night but he knows he can't so i do the going out at weekends and he babysits
mth let us know how you are

MTH, it honestly insn't a case of being adicted. You just might be one of those unlucky people who ract to booze inthis way. Dh drank, tops, 2-3 units a week! And that was enough!

If it is Pancreatitus your GP will not lecture but s/he will get you treated! And this is VITAL! Life saving even (don't want to worry you but that is the truth). What ever it is, you need it treating, so look after yourself.
