any advice from anyone? my dd is having minor op on neck to remove 'lump'. spent hundreds of £s on alternatives & had anti-biotics etc but nothing doing.its a cyst thing they think. operation last resort. hate idea of it and am so worried probably cos over-emotional with breast feeding 5mth old. any one had their toddler have GA before?how do you cope!!!!

Another little tip for avoiding puking after GA - my DS enjoys sucking water from a little sponge on a stick that they have on the wards (he's had lots of GAs due to liver transplants and other complications, so is a bit of a pro at this!). I find that he is generally very grumpy afterwards (he's just gone 2yrs old so this may be an added factor) - I think the grumpiness is mainly due to thirst and hunger from being fasted for hours, but according to the anaesthetist there are different combinations of gases they can use to minimise grumpiness too.

He also often has to lie down for 4 hours after his GA (when they do a liver biopsy) the first couple of hours are OK, but after that he wants to get up & run around. On the ward they usually have TVs and videos, but not always their favourites, so you could take one of your own to pass the time. She should also be able to take a favourite teddy or something with her too.

Good luck & hope all goes well.

tickledpink - that email never arrived. I contacted MN HQ and they said they hadnt received anything to forward on to me. Do try again.. thinking of you.

Thinking of you too yarrow

Hello IamLost, have just tried again. I am wondering if I am doing it right as you are the first person I have CAT. Fingers crossed this one will work.

IAmLost · 23/01/2007 22:35

nothing

Just back from the hospital! Wrecked and wired as had 3 hours sleep last night but want to share what happened.
First of all thank you so much all who contributed to chat. It really did help and prepare me and I knew what to expect.Thank you.
So DD had 'lump'removed. And a deep gland. The surgeon has mentioned 'not malignant' and 'nothing too sinister' so feeling good but it has to go off to the lab and will get results soon, but def. feeling positive.
TickledPink- she got lump after having virus, obviously it was a gland in neck that didn't drain and was the site of chronic infection for 9 months!!It was full of puss and bleeding off and on and purple then got bit better then worse then better, on and on like that, getting really hard.
My dd has organic diet and is pretty damn healthy AND we tried everthing alternative avalible to get it moved but in the end (and this has been big lesson for me) surgery was the answer.

The hospital was fantatic (Ninewells in Dundee). The staff were amazing and they had a Play Specialist to distract DD whilst the medical staff did their stuff and a fab play area. The best bit was they appeared with a purple and pink motorised car so DD could drive herself to theatre! When she came round the first thing she said was 'Where's ma car?'
I was amazed at how well she was. Then they got mini DVD player out for her and she watched Dora the Explorer on her bed which was good as we had got her the Dora beany baby as a 'coming round' pressie
However Baby was quite disturbed, out of his routine and I think empathising with DD and picking up on parental anxiety probably.Bless.
The hospital gave DD a gorgeous new Fairy soft toy for being brave and Get this, the food was GOOD!?Lovely peppery soup (DD didnt like of course) and a delicious cheddary pasta bake.
So there we go. Phew. Off to check my brave lttle lambkin who is with watching the wizard of Oz with Granny who came for support, which was good idea too....

Glad it went so well for DD yarrow. Don't worry about baby - one day of upset will not do any lasting damage!

Blu · 24/01/2007 16:04

Wow! The hospital sound excellent! And I'm very happy for you that ther seem to be no lasting concerns, glad that Gran could come...well done for getting through it!

Aloha · 24/01/2007 16:08

Wow! The hospital sounds fab. The much-lauded, hugely expensive Evelina children's hospital has a LOT to learn IME. Hooray for you all. Glad she's so well.

TickledPink · 24/01/2007 22:00

Oh yarrow what a positive story. I am so pleased it all went ok and your DD sounds like a brave little girl. I hope she recovers quickly and you all get a good night sleep tonight. x

lostinthesnow · 25/01/2007 20:02

yarrow just read your post. What good news. i am so glad it was a positive experience for you and your dd. how is she now? sore? And it sounds like you came home very quickly too, so no drain??

tickledpink - still no email from you. I have checked my details and I am set up to receive cat messages, and all is fine. And MNHQ say there is no problem. I'd like to talk with you if it would help, but not sure how atm......

TickledPink · 25/01/2007 20:42

lost in the snow, can you confirm I am doing this right please. I clicked on contact a mumsnetter at the top, it already defaults my information and asks for your talk name which I type in. I get a message then saying the mumsnet team will forward my details to you and then........nothing. What on earth am I doing wrong. Have just tried it again. Am I being really thick here?

Janbo25 · 25/01/2007 21:10

Thought I would add to this thread to, my ds is just 2 and is due to be sedated for a sleep EEG in a few weeks, which I am worried about he is also booked in for sometime soon for an operation on his little toes due to his tendons being to short unsure at this stage whether it is a GA or not??

Yarrow · 29/01/2007 20:40

All I can say Janbo 25 is read this thread as there is some excellent advice and it may mentally prepare you- knowing what to expect is half the battle!
