That's unusual. You can normally see an improvement within 24/48 hours. Ask a pharmacist for his opinion.

Biglips · 13/01/2007 19:27

yes thats what i thought as ive had conjunctivites a few times but this one is not really shifting it due with my cold that ive still got a bit too.

When you say you've still got it, do you mean the drops haven't cleared the infection at all, or that you stopped using them and it came back? What drops have you been given?

Biglips · 13/01/2007 19:32

yes i meant the drops hadnt cleared the infection THAT much as slightly red and slighty itchy atm. Ive uses it 3 times a day for a week now (as recommended dosage) its Chloromycetin

Hmm would be inclined to ring GP for advice on Monday. They may prescribe a different antibiotic. In the meantime keep using the drops.

Conjunctivitis can IME take ages to clear (have had to keep on with drops for 2 weeks before now). Once I thought my ds was clear after 2 weeks of treatment and when I stopped using the drops his eyes immediately got sticky again. I cleaned his eye and took him to the docs who gave me a swab to take a sample and send off for analysis (to see which antibiotic the strain was not resistant to). But his eyes never got sticky again - weird.

When I get conjunctivitis I use Brolene drops which you can buy over the counter (cheaper than the prescription charge and usually seems to work).

BTW, ds1 and I have conjunctivitis as well this week. It's horrid isn't it. Seems to be clearing well with Fucithalmic (ds) and Brolene (me).

Biglips, this happened to me a few years ago and it turned out it was actually iritis/uveitis (inflamation of the iris).

I went back to the GP who sent me straight to the Opthamology Dept of the hospital -I had various eyedrops that I had to use every couple of hours to begin with, gradually reducing over a period of about 6 wks. If it is that you need to get seen asap.

Is it painful? Sensitive to light?

Biglips · 13/01/2007 20:35

no not painful but ive always be abit sensitive to light but no any different. In the mornings its very red till i put the drops in and cleared up abit but from when i wake up till i go to bed its abit itchy

Hopefully its not iritis then as that was very painful, especially in light.

I'd certainly go back to the GPs asap though.

Good luck

thank you everyone xx

I had conjunctivites when I was fifteen (and several times before and afterwards!) and had to be given a cream rather than drops //(gross).

I would recommend going to your docs again. I had an optician appointment about six months after my conjunctivites had cleared up and had to go to hospital as the infection had not cleared up - the cream had cleared the redness but the infection was still in my eye and it took a long time to clear up afterwards. So do go back to the docs

WigWamBam · 13/01/2007 20:59

IIRC there's two different types of conjunctivitis, which aren't both treated the same way. You may need a different type of drops.

Ask the GP when you go back about the antibiotics!
