It must have been fairly funny to watch. dd was running ahead with her friend and tripped and fell. I left the pram and ran to pick her up but also tripped and flew over dd. In my attempt not to land on her and further damage her I landed really awkwardly on my shoulder.
luckily had my friend with me who helped us up (so much more embarrassing when you do that whilst on your own) and pushed pram home for me.

dd was fine within a minute but my shoulder really, really hurts. It's not bruised and I can move my arm below the elbow but I can't lift it higher than my chest. I think it's probably just stiff and bruised inside.

Now, I am breastfeeding so can't take anything other than paracetamol, can't use deep heat and can't tie it in a sling to keep it still.

Should I use a cold compress or a hot water bottle??

Poor you, sound painful (and embarrassing)!
TBH, I'd get an X-ray, although a soak in a nice deep bath may help in the short term.
Hope you feel better soon.

Use a rice sock. Fill an old (clean!) sock half-full with uncooked rice - any rice, but I tend to use long-grain - and tie a knot in the end. Put in microwave to heat. The length of time depends on how much rice you use and how hot you want the sock. Start out with 30 seconds and then increase until sock reaches required temperature. You can then mould the sock to fit whichever part of your body you are trying to soothe.

Have you tried nurofen gel? Not sure if it's appropriate if b/f though.

Thanks.
I can't bear the thought of finding babysitters and travelling to Norwich (would also have to find someone to drive me as dh at work) to get an x-ray. I'm hoping that there's nothing seriously wrong as it only hurts when I move it (or lie on it).

So - you think a warm compress is better than a cold one?

dd2 is 4 weeks old and I don't want to have to wait in a hospital for hours with her if it's unnecessary

Hmm, it is possible that you have broken your collarbone - though I suspect you would be in more pain than you are. When you were in bed last night, could you sleep on the affected side? (if you could it's unlikely that you have broken it). And I have to say even if it was broken there is very little they can do about it, just tell you not to move it iirc!

Go with the hot sock thingy and see how you are later today. Hope you are ok!

AntEater · 13/01/2007 11:26

sounds like you may have broken your collar bone or dislocated your AC (the other end of your collar bone)

Hope its a broken and not dislocated cause a break is pain for 3 weeks, the second is for life!
Trip to casualty.

Ouch cupcakes! A friend of mine broke her shoulder whilst out jogging (fell over a dog rather than a small child). I think you should get an x-ray.

Go with how you feel with regards to hot/cold on it. Sometimes you just get a 'feeling' as to which will help most. I would usually go with cold initially to help with bruising and swelling but it's probably a bit late for that now and warm is more comforting.

I'm going to the out of hours clinic round the corner. dh is going to shut his shop to help me with the children for half an hour.

I'm with bruising. If it were dislocated, she would be in constant agony. Same with broken collar bone.

AntEater · 13/01/2007 12:35

Dislocated shoulder 25-1
Broken shoulder 16-1
Dislocated AC joint 10-1
Broken collar bone 6-1
Bruising 3-1 F

I'm for a fracture of the shoulder. FIL did this just before xmas - fell over after coming out of the pub. He had it x-rayed next day and he'd fractured his shoulder. Didn't need a plaster - just a sling and some physio to regain the movement in it.

cupcakes · 13/01/2007 13:29

lol

It's...

soft tissue bruising.

I'm to continue with paracetamol and hot compresses plus I have to (gulp) keep it moving so that it doesn't freeze up. The doctor demonstrated how far I have to lift it and dh could hear me wimpering from the waiting room.

AntEater · 13/01/2007 16:31

Well done Freckle! 3x your stake less tax..
Phew Cupcakes

Freckle · 13/01/2007 16:50

That'll be 3.5 glasses of wine then (as presumably I get my stake back too) .

Hope you feel better soon, cupcakes.

I fell running after DS1 when I was 5 months pregnant with DS2. DS1 had escaped from the back garden (builders left gate open) and was heading towards an A road. I ran after him and tripped. I twisted myself to avoid landing on my bump and landed instead on my hip and side. Blimey, did that hurt. Fortunately, being pregnant, I had plenty of padding other than my bump, so it was just severe bruising too.
