What to feed 17mo with diahorreah

After three days of runny poos I thought I'd cracked it today after feeding him hardly anything all morning - banana, toasted tea cake, couple of rice cakes - and no poo at all, then felt v sorry for him and gave him a couple of fish-fingers, sweet potato and couple of oat cakes in the afternoon.... since he's gone to bed 2 runny stinky poo incidents.
So, what does anyone recommend, last time he had this he was much smaller and nhs direct and gp told me completely diff things so I'm just riding it out and making sure he drinks lots of water and milk so he doesn't get deydrated but wondered if anyone had any top tips?
Cheers

I always stick mine on the 'BRAT' diet:
B - bananas
R - rice
A - apple
T - toast

HTH

Sorry, meant to add - each one does something to help sort out D&V but can't remember what!

you can feed bland food - rice, egg, bread, fish etc but not dairy (though some people say banana is ok and spanish nurses say yoghurt is ok.). the milk is def not helping - if he's not keeping food down then rehydration fluid might be a good idea instead. 3 days is a long time for a child though - if he's not better by Monday I'd take him to the docs

hope he feels better soon.

sorry - meant to say not dairy or veg.

manamana · 13/01/2007 11:48

Thanks, much appreciated. I was wondering about the milk but my mil who is normally my saviour said it should be fine - that said her youngest is now 37...

the advice does change - when I was little it was to starve for 24 hours and I'm still here!

but I do know milk can aggravate diarrea - dd remains sensitive to it for a few days after she's got better usually in fact.

DD1 (19 mths) had horrible gastro bug over Christmas. The advice from the doctor was to cut out all dairy for at least 24 hrs and to give high energy food and lots of liquid(including fruit juice). He prescribed diaorlyate (not sure how to spell that!) but she didn't like it.
Hope this helps & that your ds feels better soon.

Thanks Shivs, have some diarolyte from last time and he likes it so will give him that instead of milk - we've already got an appt at drs on tuesday for ear infection follow up (poor little guy ) but hopefully all will be well by then

My dd (15 months)had a runny bum for nearly 3 weeks! The doctor just said to keep a check on her and take out the dairy. She is fine now.

never tried it with a child but I've always understood that flat lemonade (7up is best) is great for stomach upsets - the sugar provides energy and the fluid helps dehydration, without irritating the stomach.

(I appreciate you might be not be happy giving sugary drinks - it's only a suggestion!)

Thanks everyone, seems to be some improvement now - have had no dairy for 24hrs and been on the brat regime (with dried apple rings which are a big favourite) and egg for its 'binding' qualities according to dh. fingers crossed for rest of today then I think we may have cracked it... cheers for the 7up suggestion, not trid yet and simplyred glad to hear your story and that lo is better now.
