Constipated 3 year old

My 3 y.o. dd seems to be constipated. I'm not quite sure how long it has been since she has been constipated, because she has been ill (fever of 39.4) this week and my mind was clearly more interested in controling her temp than keeping an eye on her bowel movements.
The thing is, now she's better she doesn't seem to have the urge to go. You know she's not straining or complaining about pain, but I'm pretty sure it has been at least 4 days since her last time. Has anyone got any tips on how to get things moving again? Oh and she's also in the middle of potty training.

My DS1 (9 years) was recently constipated. He was doubled up and screaming in so much pain. I went to the chemist and bought Califig and it worked wonders

It is a completely natural remedy and can be used for children 12 months upwards.

He didnt get diarrhoea, it just got the bowel moving again.. and moving.. and moving until he was clear and a happy bunny again.

Was her temperature because of a cold or something? Has her temperature gone? Did she have stomach cramps? Just because appendicitis has symptoms of general stomach cramps and fever.

belgianmama · 12/01/2007 21:58

I went to the GP with her temperature and she couldn't find anything wrong. She only had a temperature, no cold symptoms, no head or ear ache, no sickness,... Only general miserableness.
She hasn't got any stomach cramp, yet. I tried to encourage her fluids, but she wont drink. She's also not really eating, but I think that's because of the constipation. If she does eat it is fruit.

Thank you for the Calfig suggestion, I'll see if I can find it.

its wonderful stuff. Gentle yet effective.

Id keep a close eye on her. If her temperature gets worse, or she feels sick or is sick, gets cramps, errr if you google appendicitis it'll give you the symptoms to look out for.

It probably is just constipation but the temperature thing is a bit odd (may be virus, theres lots around).

Hope the Califig helps.

No, her temp has been back to normal since thurs. That's why I didn't realise until today that actually she hasn't had a poo in quite a long time.

Dried prunes are much loved in this house!

NotQuiteCockney · 12/01/2007 22:09

If she's still not really eating, then not pooing is probably ok.

That being said, fresh fruit is gentler than dried - also if she eats dried fruit, if she doesn't take lots of water, the dried fruit will make her more constipated, not less.

poppiesinaline · 12/01/2007 22:10

ah thats ok then.

Califig will work much faster than prunes.. believe me..

belgianmama · 12/01/2007 22:31

So all those raisins she had yesterday might have actually made it worse then? She's not eating a lot, but still enough to have at least a movement every other day I think. She normally drinks loads though and now I can't get her to drink all that much. I don't know why, but I'm sure that's also a part of the problem. Would massage or excercise help too?

There was a similar thread last week and a few people swore by kiwi fruit - worth a try??

NotQuiteCockney · 12/01/2007 23:02

Going for a walk would help, certainly.

belgianmama · 13/01/2007 00:09

Thanks for all your suggestion. Bedtime now. I'll see if I can get things going tomorrow. It's the weekend, so I should be able to keep a closer eye on her myself.

poppiesinaline, hope you're around. I've tried the califig. I gave it to her yesterday afternoon with no results. Gave her another spoonful this morning, but still no sign of bowl movement. How long did the califig take to start working?
P.S. I tried giving her prunejuice, which she refused to drink. I know about kiwi, but she also doesn't like those and she's still refusing to drink much more than a cup of squash a day. It'll be 7 days now since her last time and so I'm really starting to worry now.
