my dd has a few nits, which i've now treated, but am confused as to why i found no lice. could they be old eggs? how do i tell the dead eggs from the new ones?

not sure about difference between old and new eggs sorry.

You only need one lice to lay eggs and it may be that it laid eggs and then crawled off to another head

Keep wet combing every 2-3 days though until all eggs are gone and pick out eggs if you see them on dry hair.

Failing all that - get hold of some Delacet - herbal lice treatment that kills the lice and eggs. It is the only thing I have found that gets rid of the lot in one swoop.

Have you treated yourself and everyone else in the house too?

"dead" (or hatched) eggs are whitish, and they are usually further up the follicle. the brownish new ones are close to the scalp. hedrin is a newish treatment that suffocates the lice (and gives you a feeling of immense satisfaction) and you don't need to comb.

thanks to you both i havent treated anyone else in the household, but have checked heads.

we used lyclear, but am grateful for tips about other products.

will take a closer lokk at dd when she gets home.

I would treat everyone regardless - ie wet comb every person in sight!!! You only need to miss one sneaking lice and you will be back to square one.

I can't recommend Delacet enough. You don't have to comb after with that either and it has no chemicals in it - all natural.

noonar · 11/01/2007 14:37

thanks poppies, will try to get some. where do you buy it?

didn't want to expose dd2 to the chemicals, as she's only 2. i have mad curly hair, so won't use a nit comb unless essential- and dh has no hair

I get my local pharmacy to order it in for me. I know that Sainsburys pharmacies can order it in too. For some reason it doesnt tend to sit on shelves.

funnily enough, my mum bought me some lotion in town, which turned out to be the stuff you recommended! i couldnt remember the exact name, and couldnt check as had no internet access, but asked her to get something herbal.

anyway, will use it as soon as the little bastards hatch...are you sure it kills the eggs??

ok, need to hijack my own thread with a new question.... i treated dd a week ago. working on the assumption that the eggs are still alive, will they suddenly hatch out all at once in the next couple of days??

I didn't get on with delacet. I use a herbal remedy that kills the lice and then comb. Its a pain in the bum but it seems to work best for us. I used delacet just before xmas on dd and 3 days later I found live lice on her head so I was not impressed - especially as I had washed all the bedding, hairbrushes etc.

amynnixmum · 15/01/2007 19:51

If you have to comb noonar use a load of conditioner to make it easier.

noonar · 15/01/2007 19:54

oh no! that's a shame. it gets such good press, too.
