our baby at two weeks is quite often spectacularly sick... it's still appearing from her mouth as it hits her toes! she's not distressed by this but I am. IS THIS NORMAL? She is however very distressed when her bowels move... not when the poo appears but when it's bubbling up... she yelps and cries and squirms and makes me feel terrible. However movements on arrival are normal and runny. She is breast fed. Again, NORMAL? Sorry to be a worrier. Would really appreciate the benefit of others' experience on this one.

Ermm, not sure on the sick thing but the poo bit is ringing bells for me (mine are 9 ands 29 months, how soon you forget these things!). I can remember both of them doing plenty of squirming and moaning whilst the poo was coming, they were bf too. I think it just stops as they get bigger.

Hopefully someone can help you with the sick, IYSWIM...

my little boy's 6 weeks old and he does the same thing when he's trying to poo! my other little boy used to do it too, at first i thought he was constipated but it turned out that babies like to fuss when it comes to opening there bowels! as for your little girl being sick why dont you have a word with your h v, i'm sure it's nothing but it wil put your mind at rest

If it goes no further than her toes, you're lucky! At about that age, mine went twice her own length every day for several days. If she's happy and she's peeing and pooing, it's just a laundry problem. And it does settle down. Mine, at 12 weeks today, has only done the spectacular sick thing twice in the last month. Once in a big department store, but she missed the merchandise and nobody was watching. Fortunately we had started by looking at baby clothes instead of fine watches!

I had to ask, too. It's normal for the baby to do that and for you to worry.

great cheers all just what i needed to hear. Since posting someone has also suggested I look at my own diet and eliminate 'windy' foods... which I will do... but can i give up my broccoli?? there must be threads on this already!

spots, don't believe your diet makes a bit of difference myself...bit of an old wives' tale?? (I was told it too)

Sounds like she's just a greedy baby. (mine is the same) If you do want to reduce the washing keep her completely upright for 20 minutes after feeds.
Do keep an eye on it though - if it gets really projectile (like 2 feet away horizontally) and she's not putting on weight, it could (only could) be a sign of reflux.

californiagirl · 28/05/2004 15:16

On eliminating foods: A very few babies are sensitive to what their mothers eat. Most of those are bothered by cow's milk. Not vegetables, or garlic, or whatever people are telling you you shouldn't be eating. If the problem doesn't go away in a few weeks, you might think about cutting out all dairy products. But wait a few weeks, because it will probably go away on its own by then. My baby's did (as did her spots, and her 2-hour evening screaming jags, on separate occasions)

Baby ds now 12 weeks has just puked on my lap as I sit here typing with one hand so gotta go. the pooh thing is natural, but my ds doesn'y like passing wind (farting for commoners like me). So perfectly normal.

costamum · 28/05/2004 16:42

My DS who is now 3 used to bring up his milk on a regular basis as a baby! It used to send me into a panic but after a while I just got used to the endless amount of washing. I was told several times by various people that it was completely normal and as long as your baby is putting on weight, nothing to worry about. It stopped once DS started on solids, so there is an end! As Prufrock says I think it is something to do with babies being a little greedy at times! Just not enough room in that tiny stomach.

DS used to do the sick thing - I remember being all concerned in the hospital but so far DD has been much better. I used to put a towel over my shoulder and then hold him upright after every feed. The poo thing is fairly normal I think - and you end up thinking - "all that fuss for that" when you change the nappy.
